I went into the service menu to see the battery capacity and it says 1680 mAh, while the official should have been like 1750.
Is this normal or my battery has been damaged ?
I had got a phone which was charged to 22% out of the box. Is it possible that the shopkeeper sold me a one which had already been used ?

PS. Its only been a month since a got this phone

Hi guys,
Sorry, I don't have the time to read the whole thread.
I've got a new Sony Xperia S with stock ICS and battery barely lasts till I arrive home after a normal day of work...
What are the best tips and tricks to make the battery last longer? Is there any app that really helps and is worth installing?
Thanks!

AW: [DISCUSSION] Xperia S battery life

Try juice defender app.
If you have WLAN,Bluetooth and nfc on and you dont need it that much, turn it off.
Also try to decrease screen brightness a bit.
This helped me on stock Rom.

I wouldn't recommend juice or any battery savers. It's much better when you manage stuff like that by yourself . First i would recommend rooting your phone (it's real easy) , and installing apps like "link2sd" or "system tuner pro/lite" There you can freeze(block) apps you don't use from running . Keep the screen brightness between 25-40%, use 2G network when you don't need 3G ,.....
Here are my latest results . XTX9 , stock kernel with some pimp my rom tweaks , deleting fast dormacy apk, after dealing with various wakelocks.. and few other tweaks here and there.
The area where you start to see really little background awake activity is after i disabled google now and sony's DLNA .

Hi all, i use Xperia S for 6 months now and i had bad experience with battery, i wanna tell you my story i bought the phone and ofcourse charged my battery 3 times 12h to form it good, but it couldnt last more than 15hours on one charge, thats when it was idle all day, it last 10h on one charge, i had bih problems, a week ago i decided to buy another battery but i opened my phone and wanted to see my battery, i found 1700mah instead of 1750mah inside, strange... I tought it was 1750mah but nvm then i charged my battery out of the phone, on a external charger, charged it almost 6hours and after that charge i put it back to my phone, now my battery last 20 hours on high use and 32h on normal use. Sorry for my bad english.. I hope i helped sm1, try for yourself if you experience bad battery life.

and i dont understand why i have 1700mah battery inside... I saw on ebay 2800mah battery for xperia s, what do you think guys, should i buy it? ofcourse its not original, but mb it could last me 2 days... Btw i got stupid yellow tint on screen and bad battery, what a luck ha? :)

I should flash back my roms more often... It seems to consist of some kind of battery enhancement feature embedded somewhere in the sequence..

Cm10 was the Rom used before restoring cm9.1 image. Yes there was an app (didn't check which one) running in the background and if not cm10 runs quit nicely on the battery. I found the phone was running every Rom but this one at 10+ degrees hotter under idle or minimal load on the cpu.

Is this a lousy battery usage? Sync off, data switched on once in a while, slight game and internet browsing.

I've xtx9 and stock Kernel as you. I've noticed a big improvement of battery after flashing .55 kernel and disabling gps and Google network location service.

So should I delete fast dormancy as well? Google now too?

Well, here is my consume , not bad so far

It's not lousy but it could be better;) . I would recommend to keep your wlan all the time (even if you are not conneced to AP) which will reduce "android system" usage for sure, or install Better battery stats app , and start dealing with wakelocks :fingers-crossed:

Really not bad. We actually have pretty similar resault(only your WLAN was always on,which leads to less wakelocks..) .Seems like stock kernel is really not that bad after all :D . . I deleted it because i had many "com.sonyericsson.wakeup" wakeups caused by that apk. You can delete it , but keep a backup of the file ,because in some cases it can lead to even more battery drain ;). I frozen google now as i don't use it . I don't really use it's features and it was buggy for me . Could you post SS's from better battery stats after using your phone for several hours ? I'm really interested in comparing our's :D. Like this...

Sure, tomorrow I will post my better battery stats. I also want to compare if there is any difference if I delete fast dormancy

Btw, the consume also depends a lot in your network coverage. If you move a lot during the day it's gonna be much more drain than if you stay home. I have noticed it, the differences can be very high

Looking forward :good:

Yeah , that makes sense . I use 2G because i have much better coverage with it, and when i need 3G, i simply turn it on with toggle .
.I'll keep an eye on drain while moving :good:

This has been this morning. Screen on only for 1h 13m

I don't understand what gtalk does there. It is not installed, and auto sync is off

The network has been 2G about the 75% of the time. I'm using Toggle2G app, which I suspect is wasting a bit of battery in the background, but not sure

Little flashback...

All those gtalk alarms and "com.google.android.gsf" wakeups can be removed by freezing google service framework. You lose access to playstore, but you can always unfreeze GSF to download latest updates ;) . Now having almost perfect awake graph :)
Cheers

Hi, it would be very useful and greatly appreciated if someone that kept track of all this thread will write some tips for saving battery, for people that start to read only now.

Me neither .Mine's consumption is even worse. I tryed everything i can remember . Frozen it , cleared data/cache , deleted google account from sync and reentering it .. nothing . I guess solution would be by disabling it's receivers but none of the apps made for that are working on our xperia's :/.
I'm using toggle that is included in notification bar in xtx9. Don't see anything wrong with it :silly: .

I suppose your next step is deleting fast dormacy, cause that sony.wakeup is really massive :D

I'm currently 1d 17h on battery with 3.46h of screen time. 11% remaining . I'll try to get 2d and 4h :fingers-crossed:

I don't meant the toggle of the notification bar heheheh, is another thing, it's an app that automatically can toggle 2g/3g depending on screen on /off, wifi... It's called toggle2g

So I want to make test about it, I'll let it enabled one night, and disabled the next night so I can compare consumes

After that I will try freezing fast dormancy, but I am worried about if data network doesn't work fine after doing that

I just did some tests on browsing time 15% brightness vs. 50% brightness and got some interesting results.

I did test in Dolphin with "tab reload" add-on set on 1minute. The site I was reloading was technobuffalo which is really heavy to load. But before testing brightness I was curious what is difference in battery usage desktop vs. mobile website on 50% brightness. And the difference was really obvious.

Desktop site was so power consuming, that the phone got a bit hot. And in 30 minutes it ate 15% of battery. So, 3 hours of browsing and only 10% to spare.

But luckily mobile sites are a lot friendlier. In 30 minutes 12% on 50% brightness, so 4 hours of browsing and 4% to spare. But the most interesting part was when I changed the brightness to 15% and I got the exact same results. 30 minutes 12%...

And then I wanted to isolate web browsing so I tried the same tests in airplane mode in case of mobile network eating battery.
Without network connection half an hour of browsing mobile sites ate 10% of battery with 50% brightness. So, exactly 5 hours of browsing to 0%. But what happens with 15% brightness? Nothing much, 30 minutes 9%. That means 5 hours and 10% to spare, or 5 hours and 30 minutes and 1% left.

Is it really worth to hurt your eyes on 15%???

Do you know what? It irritates me reading you people moaning about battery life, it's a high definition phone with an awesome screen, if you want your battery to last a few days, go get a cheap phone that does nothing but txt and calls:mad:

As I said I did battery tests with the new Jelly Bean in web browsing and video playback and I must say that difference is really really obvious.

I did the same tests as before with ICS and compared them.

All my tests in browsing were done in dolphin browser with auto reload plugin put on 1 min reload. Website I tested was TechnoBuffalo because it is quite a heavy load. Brightness was at 50%.

To quicky freshen up, my previous results with ICS are found here: http://xdaforums.com/showpost.php?p=37103064 and I will include them for easier comparison.

In ICS browsing desktop pages was really battery consuming so the first test I did was this.
Half an hour of reloading desktop version of TechnoBuffalo every minute did consume 15% in ICS. So in 3 hours 90% would be gone, not a very good result.

But in Jelly Bean the same test ate only 10% of battery. Pretty good improvment right? 1 hour 20% so 5 hours till the phone dies. Almost 2 hours of improvement which is really great.

    screenshot2013-05-30-18-.png
    screenshot2013-05-30-18-.png

And next is mobile version. My previous result on ICS was 12% in 30 minutes so in 4 hours you would be left with 4%. Not that good but at least better than desktop sites.

Result in Jelly Bean was so surprising that I had to redo the test once more, because I couldn't believe my eyes. In 30 minutes only 7% of battery was gone so 1 hour 14% and if we calculate, we get 7 hours with 2% to spare. WOW, right? This is whole 3 hours more which is pretty huge improvment.

    screenshot2013-05-30-19-.png
    screenshot2013-05-30-19-.png

And I got curious what would really heavy load do to battery usage. I did another test with the same mobile version but with 15 second reload which is pretty hard because it loads almost all the time. It loads the page and there it goes again.
The results aro also pretty good. 10% in 30 minutes so basically the same as desktop site - 5 hours of browsing but I don't know who would load new page every few seconds in real life.

    screenshot2013-05-31-01-.png
    screenshot2013-05-31-01-.png

Last test was video playback. I tried 720p video in mp4 and mkv to see if there is any difference. And I also tried if there is any difference between Sony's movie player and BS player. But in all tests I got the same result - 9% in half an hour. So 5 hours with 10% to spare. In ICS I got same 5 hours but with 0% to spare so some improvment is there but not that amazing as web browsing.

    screenshot2013-05-30-22-.png
    screenshot2013-05-30-22-.png

So Jelly Bean is a massive improvment in terms of battery usage comparing to ICS and I am really happy with it.

You guys should've bought the Xperia SP, S is sooo outdated and weak

You're absolutely right, I should've hopped on my time machine, gone to the future, and gotten that phone
