My 4 year old OG epic 4g has CM10 running on it, a phone that stopped receiving updates at gingerbread... So hardware while it is a factor can still run latest android versions. It's all up the creative minds of developers.

Pretty sure s3 will get 4.4 , because I got jellybean 4.1.2 on sgs2 so why not s3 catch this kitkat. Only a year old this phone
