I'm confused...
back when I had Motorola phones, when they said flashing, it pretty much meant that I could delete undeletable ringtones and wallpapers and games etc, by connecting the mini usb cable and a few little programs on my PC...phones weren’t that complicated then...
my next real phone was the samsung eternity and for that one I just took it into some shop in San Diego where I told some dude and said make it so all these useless undeletable features are gone...and that was that...
Now with this S3 phone, all I want to do is get it to the point where there are no preinstalled widgets or apps or suggested programs blah blah blah. There are like 40 things running in the background at ll times and I cannot no matter what I do uninstall or disable them: Tmobile Music Center....Flipbook...Dropbox...Amazon...Zynga Games...all this kind of nonsense I want off the phone. I'll then decide for myself which mp3 app or photo viewing app I want...
So these terms now..flash...root...ROM...ack..
Which of the things is the one I need to do ? They all seem easy, so Im comfortable doing them myself...but not sure which to do

Rooting is your first job. Just read about the different ways on here and do whichever you feel most comfortable with.

You'll need to root (jailbreak) your phone. Then you can flash (install) a ROM (custom firmware). Custom ROMs usually come de-bloated (useless apps removed).
Just make sure that everything you do is for your phone and carrier.

hello im in a bit of an issue, been following you since you were on the tmobile sgs4g
so i had done a back up of the rs12 Rom so i could flash the new miui yes? so after i got bored of miui and wanted to go back to rs12, i went into twrp and tried to restore it. So after its trying to restore it says "failed" so i back to the first page in twrp and it just reboots.. weird right?
so after it boots up its just stuck on the hyperdrive boot screen. im at work so i cant do anything to fix it at the moment. i knew all i had to do was odin back to stock right (root66)? so i did that, everything seemed good, odin said it passed. nope. it got stuck in the samsung screen..
so then i came across this page, downloaded the tar.md5 file you have and tried that one, odin passes it, led light comes on, then nothing it just gets stuck on the glowing samsung boot screen.. any help? thank you so much.

Need to have the phone restored to stock original ROM, non-rooted, for replacement. Presently running root-injected stock ROM. courtesy of mr.Robinson. Have TriangleAway already installed and working - my Q is in regards to the methodology: there is a slight difference between this post and http://mobotechie.com/android/how-to-restore-samsung-galaxy-s3-to-stock-firmware-ultimate-guide. Could anyone comment on which one they'd use?

Just run triangle away and then flash stock firmware. Just when you boot into download mode make sure the counter says 0.

I don't know how relevant it may be, but it'd be nice to describe the distinction from SGH-T999L.

You have a few ways to go here..
But before we continue, let me explain something to you. Our phones have this 'flash counter' built in.
There is a way to bypass the counter, and to reset it after you've triggered it, so don't be alarmed.
Flash counter? What's that?

These are my ways of flashing my device and they have worked perfectly, there are other ways as well and they have been posted.
So look around if you find this confusing!15How to ODIN back to stock after messing up trying to flash a ROM or rooting.
1. Download this: http://samsung-updates.com/get/2144/Samsung_Firmware_SGH-T999_TMB_T999UVALH2_Android_4_0_4.html
It is the FULL stock firmware. t's roughly 720MB. It will be in a compressed format.
2. Once your download (Stock Firmware) is complete, extract the .tar.md5 file from the first link I gave you. (Use WinRAR or a similar program.)
That is the file you will ODIN to your phone (Add it to the PDA part of ODIN.)
3. Put your phone into download mode. (Confirm that the count is set at 0)
4. Odin like you normally would.
When you initially add it to ODIN, it will look like it gets stuck at <OSM> Please wait..
But it's only because it's a big file, wait it out.
It should finally continue and now it should say:
<OSM> T999UVALH2_T999TMBALH2_T999UVALH2_HOME.tar.md5 is valid.
<OSM> Checking MD5 finished Sucessfully..
<OSM> Leave CS..
And you should be ready to press Start.
5. Now boot into stock recovery, wipe data and cache, reboot!
How to get into recovery:
- Hold down the 'HOME' + 'VOLUME UP' buttons and press the 'POWER' button for about 5 seconds while the phone is off to enter Recovery Mode.
Your phone should now be 100% stock.
Note: My phone isn't connected, but I took screenshots to help you.
