@ $omator, chill out. Everytime I run across one of your post you sound mad at the world and self prescribed "all knowing". Not every body is an expert like you. If you don't want to help you don't have to, for that matter if this stuff makes you so ANGRY nobody is making you participate.

A little question for my fellow ents :D

So I noticed that it's either CWM2 or CWM3 for flashing the modems and whatnot. I also noticed that CWM2 is for froyo based and CWM3 is gingerbread based.

I'm currently running Serendipity VII Build 2 which, correct me if I'm wrong a Gingerbread ROM. My current version of CWM is CWM2.5.X.X. Should I be flashing the Froyo based modems?!?! IF not how do I go about getting CWM3. Thanks for the help ppl.

It's not neccessarily as cut and dry as cwm2.5 is froyo and cwm3 is gb. Since you have cwm2.5 you can flash either cwm2.5 or cwm3 modems, cwm3 is backwards compatible with cwm2.5. Since you are running 2.5 I'm guessing you are using the kernel that comes with serendipity so my suggestion is just stay with the kernel you are on.

I don't want to confuse you anymore so if you want a definitive answer you can flash which ever you want although in case you want to keep modems on your SD card I would suggest dl the cwm3 files incase serendipity goes the cwm3 and since you can flash cwm3 files with cwm2.5.

Wow.. I did a preliminary test with JVP indoors 1900 bands and the difference as far as signal bars is unbelievable better than Jk4 or jv6. I was getting low fluctuating signal until I installed JVP.. I need more testing for voice, data, 850mhz.. so far I am impressed.

Has anyone created a list for what modems do best in what geographical area? I would like to know what may be the best (sound and battery usage) modem for the DC metro area. Any recommendations?

can some one tell me which is the gingerbread MODEM for london UK.i am on 2.3.4 JVP ROM. thanks
you have 3 carriers there in uk am i correct?
they all released 2.3.3 branded firmwares with different modems if i recall good
best choice would be to take modem.bin out of one of those firmwares from you crarrier and stick to it
as i guess technicans there compiling/releasing carrier branded firmware knows best what modem to use

here are the UCKE3 and UCKF1 Cwm3 flashable files. I used devz3ro's old cwm3 zip and just changed the modem.bin and updater-script to remove his name and all since I didn't think he wanted his name on something he didn't do. Donate to him if you want since he is awesome for doing all the other ones. updater-script could look better but they work and say what you are flashing. This is my first time ever doing it.

I been messing around with my modem, but with the ones in the poll that says its the best, my phone doesnt work with it on the 850 band. If I were to call it from my house phone it says call again, and I wont hear anything if I call out from my captivate.

So I tried ucjj4 and I get sound, but low reception, and very low speeds (around 200 kb/s).

Im using SGS tools to flash my modem. I also made sure im stuck on the 850 band.

Is there something im missing? I hate downloading at very slow speeds, even the internet is wacked out when im out on the road.

Im on the att network.

Attached are CWM flashable 2010 & 2011 SGS modems that (for the most part) have the WCDMA 850 band within them. A I9000 based kernel (reoriented) is required for the I9000 modems to be usable on the Captivate, I am not responsible for bricking your phone if you use something else. I did some poking around with a hex editor to compare the files and was able to pull some info out:

It appears that most people are having better success with the "Aries" based modems. If you have trouble with the modems, please make sure your phone is utilizing the WCDMA 850 band and not 1900 by using the instructions below.

From the phone Dial Pad, when you enter: *#0011# you should see one of the following 3G bands:

    200px-Snap20100921_223949.png
    200px-Snap20100921_224014.png

When testing these modems please only report when connected using "WCDMA 850".

If you are on WCDMA 1900 and want to change to WCDMA 850,
    1. From the phone Dial Pad, enter: *#2263#
    2. From the "BAND SELECTION" menu select "[2] WCDMA BAND"
    3. From the "WCDMA BAND" menu select "[5] WCDMA 850 (FDD V)"
    4. Exit out of menu and check to make sure your band is now WCDMA 850 using *#0011#

Note: By default your "BAND SELECTION" is "AUTOMATIC", so if you want to revert your changes, repeat only steps 1 & 2 above, selecting "[1] AUTOMATIC" in step 2.

The quote below is from a great map showing the best modem per members actual experience for various areas of the country. It's a great resource, check it out and give your input!
From http://soggycashew.weebly.com/: After digging and digging through several threads I have come up with a list of CWM3 modem files for the Samsung Captivate. I hope this helps because I know its useful to have all the files in one place and not scattered throughout forums. I take no credit for creating these files I just have been collecting them to help myself and others and to keep them all in a general location. Enjoy and hope people make comments on what they would like to see on this site!

Important: Do not flash the modem with the phone plugged into USB or the charger. It could cause a no service at restart.

Also if you don't have 850mhz and don't give a crap about 850mhz, then don't do this. Just flash to whatever modem you want.

Another note: If you flash a modem that has 850 enabled by default...you need to start the whole procedure over. If you do otherwise it may not work. So it is at your own risk.....

You need to flash or be on (UGJL2, TLJL3, UGJK3, UGJK4) and enable 850mhz ONLY by going into the dialer and type in *#2263# select WCDMA and select 850mhz. Boot into recovery and flash (BVJJPD or BVJJPG). Boot up and type in the dialer *#0011# and verify 850mhz. Reboot into recovery and flash (XXJVK or ZSJPG or XXJQ1 or BUJS1 or XXJVE etc). Boot up and verify 850mhz by entering *#0011# in the dialer. If you don't have 850mhz you did not do it correctly or your phone/ROM doesn't like the modem.

Once you verfified 850mhz above, go back into the dialer and enter *#2263# and select automatic then select menu> back. Then select combi bands and then select to add wcdma850. Now select menu>back and verify the * is next to all bands. IF so Press the back to to exit and let the modem do its job.

At this point more than likely the phone will stay only on 850mhz until you reboot.... then all the other bands will work properly.

PS: If you already have JPG, JQ1, JS1, JVE, working on 850mhz, you can flash to any of them without using the whole process above. Just flash.

    Modem Test

I decided to setup my own test featuring a block of modems that have 850mhz by default and the lower block require a little bit of effort to get them flashed on to work properly with the 850mhz band.

These are speed test with perfect signal (-75db to -85db) all using the same local server. 5 runs for each and omitting the highest and lowest of each.

Rom Used was Continuum v4 (JS8) SP#59 Kernel

From the looks of things the upload is capped no matter what modem in 850mhz.

Anyways.... I'll be using many of these modems and I can tell you that I will post which modems can perform in low signal areas ( -110db to -105db which is typically no bars to one bar) without timing out or just sitting there for what seams eternity.

I will also be testing voice quality during my highway commute. I can tell you that some of these modem sound pretty bad on the highway using the phone with no BT headset.
