I've been holding off on making the jump from Sense based roms to Cyanogen/AOSP just because I couldn't find a good alternative to the htc News widget.
I loaded this on my htc Incredible with LauncherPro and have had no problems loading and reading my feeds. Great work!

The only thing I've noticed missing is the article thumbnails as previously mentioned in this thread, but it is by no means an essential feature.

If you're still getting reports of display issues I can load it onto my htc Eris and Moto Droid later to try to isolate the issue.

I cannot get any feeds to show up, I am using LPP. I checked all my URL's and they validate as well, no feeds showing up...

I guess that could be arranged. However as i said in my previous post, i still have some problems reconfiguring list items dynamically, so i used a dirty trick to either hide or show news summary. Just setting the word count to 0 doesn't do the trick because then elements padding are visually unpleasant.

No worries. It's not a major thing, just a suggestion for the future.

One issue I have noticed is that it tends to display the "Loading" text in the upper-right corner almost always. It's sometimes hard to tell whether it's actually loading or if the text is just stuck (I gather it tends to get stuck as CPU usage is relatively low and my battery doesn't drain as I'd expect if it was constantly retrieving). This is with the update interval set to 2 hours.

And one last request (for when you have the time). The ability to save your widget settings to SD card and then import them back would be helpful for time when you need to re-load your widgets (such as after a firmware upgrade).

Works on ADW Launcher but not on Launcher Pro

Hi,

Just wanted to say this is a great widget & looks great on dark home screens.

I have the widget working on ADW Launcher but if i then use home switcher for Froyo to change to Launcher Pro I cant get the widget to load the news feeds.

Is it a case of only one instance is allowed to run?

Cheers.

Great app. It's nice to finally have my news widget back. One question, is it possible to add a slider to change the level of transparency.I'd like it to be a little darker. Thumbnails would be nice to. Other than that perfect.

Edit: ok correct me if I'm wrong but I just downloaded an update and seems to have made the widget smaller. maybe I'm seeing things. I'm on an evo and there seems to be more space on the sides than before. I see there are 3 different backgrounds available. Great idea, but I still think the dark option isn't dark enough.

Thanks for the offer! However users reporting this issue (in market comments) donot provide the feed urls as asked, also no market comment describes the actual problem, market commenters tend to just shout simple and quite useless "don't load!" statements.

Anyway i added in 1.2 some hints to help the user, and i also auto-prepend the protocol to the url if it is missing. I hope this will help, even if only a little.

Another thing, i don't know how the market filters applications, but this widget targets android version greater than 2.1; and I only tested it quickly against a 2.1 emulator (which is a real pain, by the way, given how slow the emulator is).

I cannot reproduce it. I have no clue right now as what could be causing that behaviour.

However please note that (re)loading is a two-step process which involves querying the db twice: first news entries are fetched from the db (if any), then feed is remotely loaded, when the feed has been loaded, news entries are saved to the db, and the widget is updated (which triggers the second db query).

Perhaps what you see has something to do with the way i reload the feed?

Done! This was actually planned :) It was indeed a critical feature (for me at least) : as i test the widget, i tend to install and uninstall it quite often and losing the configuration with each and every reinstall proved to be quite annoying.

So now it possible to export (resp. import) preferences to (resp. from) SD (in Main settings activity) and to import/export feeds (in Edit Feed activity). I separated the feed import/export and preferences save/restore.

Issue fixed! User error! Great app!

Just out of curiosity - and also to add something to prevent users to make the same errors if possible, what error was it?

Multiple, independent, instances are allowed. I have no issue with LP (with or without using Home Switcher). However ADW can auto-enable scrollable widgets, i'm not sure LP can. So scrollable widgets must be enabled explicitely by the user. But I'm not sure this the root of problem.

me too, I 'm using stock i9000 launcher. Selected the rss provided but no feeds showed up.

I can't test with the i9000 launcher (i only have a desire), but i doubt the widget is compatible with this particular launcher. Did you test it, for instance, with Zeam?

This is also a planned feature. I prefer to not give any roadmap, but it will come (rather sooner than later).

Thanks you all for your support and your suggestions.

Hi Berliner,

Thanks for testing this widget. That's weird. I got a few comments in the market console that report a similar behaviour. However i'm not able to reproduce it. The grey background may indicate either that the widget feeds cannot be parsed or that scrollable widgets are not enabled.

I use android-rome-rss the fetch the feeds. Perhaps there is something to dig there? What feed(s) did you specify?

I havent specified any feeds cause it only shows grey screen..
So I wasnt able to choose some..

Edit:Although I have the newest version from the market there is only grey background..only the menu changed for me.

Indeed. Now that you're telling me, i can see that.. I've changed the widget layout to be able to better support backgrounds, and this causes it: I think margins are doubled. Thanks for making me notice it!

So are you saying it's going to be stuck like this. I really need the widget to fill out the whole page like it was.

I understand. However from what you describe i cannot even begin to establish a diagnosis. Could you feed me more info? For instance, what exact tap sequence did you do, which android version and what launcher do you use. A few screenshots might also help. Thanks for any help you can provide. You can contact me by pm if you prefer.

No, not at all. It is clearly a regression that has already been fixed locally. I will deploy a minor version in the coming days (most probably tomorrow evening). I fear i also introduced a issue that i need to solve before republishing.

Is this a closed source project ? i'm also a developper and i'll be quite interested in some line of code or pieces of advices

For now it is indeed a close source project. I may open it in the coming months. But before that i need to clean it up a bit because there's especially a couple of classes i'm not too proud of (learning android development along the way). I am myself quite new to android but if i can be of any help, be my guest.

Hi! Terrific widget, thank you!

Is it possible to extend its functionality to messages and email? I find your design one of the best - so it would be great to use the widget universally.

I see the potential in this widget but first you fix the url stuff. I would use this as my default but some url's i put aren't working like ESPN.com and engadget.com. My motorola widget can get the news feed so i believe you can too. If you can help that would be great and so far it looks slick and awesome

    Last edit 2012-11-04: version 2.1.2.

ICS compatible [see history below]. Min compatibility: Android 3.1 (api level 12).

Source is available on google code under a GPL 3 license: http://code.google.com/p/scrollable-news-widget/source/checkout

Eclair, Froyo Gingerbread (and Honeycomb 3.0) users: please use v1.4.4.1.

Previous versions are available form google code : http://code.google.com/p/scrollable-news-widget/downloads/list

    ---

I've published yesterday [23 nov. 2010] the first version of a scrollable news widget. This is my first attempt at android development.

I've tested the widget against Launcher Pro and ADW Launcher quickly and quite extensively with Zeam. It still needs some work (amonst other things: theming, feed validation, feed lookup, ...) but it is still usable -- meaning i use it.

Since version 1.4.0 GReader and news sharing are supported through Scrollable News Addons (paid app).
The addon has been unpublished as it won't be maintained anymore. Its features will in time be integrated into the main app.

So true ... the "Scrollable news widget" is so much more neater, simpler and nicer. Feels so nice to use it and read news on this widget.

Really, wish one of the experts out here could take on this and revive it!

    1.3

    Hi,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about scrollable widget API and LP. As it turned out, i finally decided to continue supporting LP. So i rollbacked my changes and downgraded back to scrollable api v1.

Version 1.3 has been published a bit earlier today (recent changes are listed in the first post) and is still compatible with LP. It includes some suggested improvements and a few minor fixes (most of them i had to blind code because i cannot reproduce them) .

How can I get this to get feeds from google reader?

Use greader from a pc first. And make the feeds public. Watch ur public site and click atom link on the right. Copy That link.

True but I really think better feed discovery is required. It's the only reason I don't use this widget (and I really want to!). It is just painful to set up your feeds because sure-as-gravity I don't remember each of the URLs.

Keyword search and find is required really... a search for "gizmodo" for example should return the appropriate feed IMHO.

As stated here, this will be part of 1.4. 1.4 should also add some sort of news sharing feature (i'm working on it these days).
