I need to return my Nexus 7 to ASUS as the speaker has the distortion issue. In order to fill the RMA form I need the serial number. Unfortunately this doesn't appear to be the same serial number as is shown in the OS.

Anyone know where I can find it? Unfortunately I ditched the box....and there is no sticker on the back

I presume you didn't register the N7 online with Asus "My Asus". I've not seen an Android system info app that displays the Asus serial number.
There is a sticker with it on inside the case so the only option is to pop open the case.

He said he'd thrown the box.

Unfortunately mate, I don't think theres much you can do.

Perhaps download a toolkit, sometimes that identifies your serial, but I can't understand why the serial number displayed on your device is wrong....

There are two serial numbers on the box "CSSN" and "SSN". The CSSN get be seen using the Sytem settings screen and is a unique Android build number. The SSN is the Asus serial number and other than the box I've only seen it on stickers inside the case and outside the case next to the USB port

ser number
Look at this webpage (filling in the 1st letters- no w-w-w);
://support.asus.com/repair.aspx?no=566&SLanguage=en
Also, I have noticed that when inputting the serial number for a
motherboard into this webpage [the product 'fault report' webpage];
://vip.asus.com/eservice/techserv.aspx
that as soon as the serial number is input, the page automatically
fills in the Product Type and Product Model in those boxes. This
would indicate that serial numbers, at least for motherboards, and
possibly for other products, is unique within models, and possibly
unique even within all types of ASUS products. Relevance? Well,
you could input all lines on the item, and if it is in fact the serial
number, it should automatically be accepted as valid if you input
the line that is the serial number - that's the theory, anyway. But
surely the serial number is hiding somewhere - in the bty bay? No?
Cheers
