There are many posts, how to install rom, radio, what is hard-spl, etc...

Here is a little help:

- There is NO best rom...cookers are different, users are different, roms are too....try them, do not ask which one is the best !
- Hard-spl is a hacked bootloader (spl) you can flash cooked roms with it. YOU NEED it, if you want to flash cooked roms or radio or splash screen because it ignores CID-lock.
- CID-lock means Carrier ID lock. For example offical WWE devices have CID HTC_001. (AUS and SEA devices have HTC_023, etc...) This means you can flash these devices, if offical rom has the same CID as your device has. (or you have to use hard-spl)
- Romflashing will delete everything from you PDA!
- WWE means World Wide English
- It is strongly recomended to remove SD card and Sim card before flashing.
- All the roms in Polaris forum compatible with Cruise, Polaris, P3650, XDA Orbit 2 (but you NEED hard-spl before flash)
- Radio-rom is the firmware of wireless (GSM-GPS-WIFI) communicaton hardware modul. This is NOT the FM radio!
- Full rom has 5 parts: ipl+spl+splashscreen+os+radio (cooked roms do not include all of them)
- Shipped rom can be restored, if there is an offical or dumped downloadable original rom.
- Backup your current rom means dump and reconstruct it. (find links below)

Note:
These steps are tested on Windows XP sp3
These steps are not the offical rom upgrade, you can void warranty.
Bad flashing can brick your device. Do it on your own risk!

So:

How to install HARD-SPL! (You MUST do it first and once!)

Download Hard-spl, and unpack it to a folder.
Connect your PDA to PC, and be sure Active Sync can connect to it.
From the Hard-spl folder, run RomUpdateUtility. (push Next, Next, and Update…)
Your will see a tricolor screen on your PDA.
It will ask you to Replug your usb Cable. DO IT!
The screen will be grey, and a few seconds later hard-spl will be installed.
If you want to check it, step manually to bootloader (Press and hold camer button and press reset), and you have to see SPL-2.20.Olinex string on the tricolor screen.

How to install cooked rom.

Download the cooked rom, and unpack it to a folder.
STEP MANUALLY to bootloader. (Press and hold camera button and press reset)
You will see a tricolor screen on you PDA, and you have to see SPL-2.20.Olinex string. IF YOU NOT SEE THIS DO NOT TRY TO FLASH ROM!!!
Now connect your PDA to PC.
From the Hard-spl folder, run RomUpdateUtility.exe, or Rom.exe, (Next, Next….)
The screen will be grey, and a few minutes later the new rom will be installed.
(After rom flash Hard Reset is strongly recommended)

How to install Radio rom

Download the radio rom, and unpack it to a folder. (only first and second radio-roms are for Polaris, the others are for Kaiser)
From the Hard-spl folder, run RomUpdateUtility.exe (Next, Next….)
The screen will be grey, and a few minutes later the new radio rom will be installed.

Note: Here are the Murata radios if you have bad gsm reception
Note2: Radio 1.59.42.15 and 1.59.42.23 are here

Flash back to original SPL

Thanks to Olipro, Cmonex, Pawel062 and Abbsta

Note: use restore spl only in warranty situation. Hard-spl is much more safe than original spl!

So:
I advice first flash your original rom. (step manually to bootloader, after start the RomUpdateUtiliy from the downloaded original rom)

Restore original SPL:

Download the attached originalspl.zip (these are from the offical 1.25.405.1 WWE, 1.28.405.1 Test WWE and 3.13.405.0 WWE HTC rom)
Unpack it to a folder.
Connect your PDA to PC, and be sure Active Sync can connect to it.
Start the RomUpdate Utility from the folder.
You will see the tricolor screen on you pda, and device will ask you to Replug USB cable. DO IT!
After a few seconds original spl is restored. (this will restore only spl, not flash the full rom)
You can check it to enter manually to bootloader.
You have to see this in tricolor:
POLA100 (or POLA200)
SPL-1.25.0000 (or SPL-1.28.0000 or SPL-3.13.0000)
CPLD-2

Do it on your own risk!
If you are stucked in bootloader or in windows screen, this will not work!

With Hard-SPL v2 I see a EnterBooloader.exe file, do we need to run this to enter Bootloader rather than the manual step?

Thanks for the guide.

Update 1: You don't need to get into Booloader mode manually.
Update 2: Please add this, "You must always do a HARD RESET after a successful custom ROM flash." Follow this guide on how-to SOFT RESET & HARD RESET a Polaris (http://www.hardreset.eu/htc_touch_cruise_polaris_hard_reset_soft_reset_en.html)

Hard reset is a good idea!
With Hard-spl DO NOT use Manually Bootloader. I did not write to use it...
With Rom and Radio Rom flash USE Manually Bootloader. (becuse it will use the hard-spl on pda, not the jump-spl in Enterbootloader.exe)

When you see all lights go off the phone, release the Stylus and keep the Beam and IE button pressed. It will enter the Bootloader in a few seconds.

I used the following commands to get the raw dump files:

pdocread -w -d FLASHDR -b 0x800 -p Part00 0 0x31f000 Part00.raw
pdocread -w -d FLASHDR -b 0x800 -p Part01 0 0x3c0000 Part01.raw
