A monopod can be just as good for high-end amatuer photos. Photography was my major in college, and I wound up using a monopod more times than one would imagine. Maybe even more than my $500 tripod. And, it was a homemade one. Didn't take that long to make it, just a little planning. Monopods are just much easier to transport.
