New G2 Owner, help going back to 80100d firmware

Hello All,

I just purchased a G2 and it's running Android 4.2.2, Build # JDQ39B, Software Version D80010q.

I'd like to root and I just read This Newbie Guide

From reading that I got that I need to go back to Software version 80100d to root is that correct?

Is this the easiest way to do so? http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=2663369

Anything else I should be aware of?

Yes that is the easiest method to do so since it is automated

Can someone give me more info on this? Will IORoot give me root without having to go back to 80100d? I do want to flash ROMS and use a recovery like TWRP.
