Update!

I sold my phone so I couldn't take photos last week, but it didn't stop me from taping it to a napkins to take a shot in mid air from a laptop front facing camera for you guys. Here is version 2.

This one looks pretty good, for those who want it as un-obstructive as possible. I ordered one but will have to wait for it to see if it works fine.

I also ordered 2 of these. Here's to hoping first that I receive them, and hoping that they work.

My own USB OTG attachment

Hello, thank you for this thread since it inspired me to try my own adapter.

I ended up stripping the USB micro B male end of one of my USB cords, and the female end of a USB A extension cord. After much trial and error, I ended up soddering the following connector via your wiring diagrams. I then used a shrink tube to encapsulate the delicate USB micro B male wiring, and used UV adhesive to tightly bond the micro B and USB A connectors together. Finally I used some black shrink tube to loosely encapsulate the outside, mostly for cosmetic purposes.

The female A connector is immediately behind the USB micro B male connector that goes into the Nexus 7 port, so that it can accomodate a USB stick or mouse/keyboard connector, but does not take up additional space. In addition, when the Nexus 7 is used with a case any OTG connection still allows the tablet to be flush with a surface.

One question: when using Stickmount, I find that it takes a small while for the tablet to be able to read the card, and even then some images open with a "file not found" error. Would that be due to the quality of my build (which saw a lot of heat during my soldering and re-soldering), the quality of the connectors (I grabbbed whatever cables were around to cannibalize) or is that a known limitation of the OTG protocol?

Thank you

Can I ask, when the tablet is laying down on it's back, does the back sit flat to the surface or is it lifted on one side due to the thickness of the OTG adapter?

Thanks.
It protrudes a little less than 1mm. Placed flat, the tablet isn't lifted, but instead the adapter is slightly twisted due to the weight of the tablet.

Haven't encountered any data transfer problems due to the twisting, but all the same, I would suggest not using it this way for prolonged periods of time, or at the very least put something thick enough on the tablet itself so that no stress is made on the microusb port.

But most of the time I use my N7 with a case and a bunker ring, so it's less of a problem for me. For those with cases, it shouldn't be a problem.

This is my little project, it holds micro SDHC up to 16GB (not tried 32GB yet ) and it works very well

I have no usb gamepad to try with.

But no reason for it not to, tested with usb mouse and keyboard, no problems.

Ah there is no way it can work. Gamepads use phsyo-cosmic power, and everyone knows that phsyo-cosmic power can not make a 90 degree turn as it causes the universe to fold in on its self. :eek:
Do you really want to be the cause of the universe ending just for a gamepad? This is the question you have to ask yourself when you get up in the afternoon. :rolleyes:

Question

I like a lot of the designs everyone has here but doesn't this put a lot of pressure on the micro charging port?

Even just using the port for charging usually over the time messes up and becomes lose and etc. This seems like it is putting a lot of pressure and then we are going to take it on and off for charging nexus.

Hopefully this works better when the Dock is ready and we can just leave the usb reader in all the time.

:confused:

Somehow I think you'll be waiting in vain for an official dock. :(

Or it won't work unless naked. There's goes any casing used. :D

Hey Cap, none of your pics are clickable to zoom, all the links are broken bud! thanks for the update though, I plan to try this out soon!

The original pics was huge so I photoshoped it smaller. I thought you will use pin to zoom from your Nexus 7. I'm viewing from 15" laptop and the pics are big enough. Any pics you want bigger pm me.

Does it work for gamepads? Only reason I bought it should be receiving mine soon, finally here in the us.

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus

I use PS3 controller, and it works for some games like Asphalt 7, riptide GP, ect. (without root) I don't have gamepad but there are a bunch of apps to read 3rd party controllers you can download on PlayStore.

If you want it to be sturdy then you have to use gluegun like i did. It's very sturdy, without worrying it falling apart.

    Update: v.2! (half a penny)

    Inspired by this video/OTG, pass to 0:47. Which I couldn't find one to purchase. This L design when plugged in is a bit smaller than a penny. No welding needed! Use (female USB for game controllers, mouse, ect). Designed with a case-on in mind.
    ======

    You'll need 3 parts for hardware. Micro USB OTG, Micro SD reader, ofcourse Micro SD card and a software of your choice to run it. I don't root so I'm using Nexus Media Importer.

    Be safe and wear gloves. You don't want to get hurt for this mod.
    ======

    Step1: Cut in the middle of the left or right side of Micro USB OTG. Be careful, use glove on the hand to hold it down. (note: the OTG link that i provided is the exact one that I used to mod, but you can find the cheapest parts from Amazon or Ebay, ect.).

    Step2: Peel out the inner part of the OTG.

    Step3: Cut the part closer to the Micro USB completely off (with wires still intact). Carefully peel the wires to the far end of the USB female. Then cut the rest of the plastic off like in the picture.

    Step4: Turn the Micro USB end to make a L shape like in the picture. I used glue gun to clued it together. You can use electrical tape if you like. Enjoy!

    **I'm not holding reliable for any injuries or broken parts from this mod, do it at your own risk**
    This is the original size of the device when it's plugged in, it's about 3 size of a penny in length.

    Step1-3
    aaaa

    Step4

    ====================================================================================

    Version 2 still retained female USB for mouse and game controller or a case in mind.

    ==========
    You'll required soldering, glue gun or electrical tape. (note: this version is a challenge to make. If you think you can solder the wires into the small spaces on micro USB's bins then proceed or you can make version 1 which required no soldering)

    ==========

    Step1: Strip micro USB and female USB completely. (any spare female USB from old devices will do. Make sure you have the right micro USB end like in the diagram if you decided to get a spare)

    Step2: Measure the wires as needed from micro USB to female USB. Then pre-cut the outer layer of the wires so you can bend at 90 degree angle with ease when wiring the wire along the sides. (careful don't cut the wires inside). Next, strip a few millimeter from both ends of the 4 wires.

    Step3: I suggest to lay the 4 wires on top; along the micro USB and solder it in the pins. (though I didn't realized this obstruction was a big deal until it resulted in a bump on my model when wiring it downward). Curve your stripped end of the wires for easy soldering. A trick I used to solder the wires to micro USB is putting a thin foil paper in between 2 pins. After you're done, remove it and repeat until you're done.

    Step4: Lay your micro USB on top of the solder point of the female USB at 90 degree to shape the L. (make sure no metal part of the micro USB touches the female USB sholdering point. You can lay it on top of the female USB but it will add a few millimeter thickness). Follow the diagram to solder all wires to the female USB.

    Step3

    aaaa v.2 when plugged in it's half a size of a penny. You're seeing USB plugged into the OTG with microSD inside.
