Currently I use Avast (Free version) with PeerBlock to control activity on specific ports. In the past, I used Kaspersky anti-virus in the past, but my license ran out and I just never renewed.

For paid: Kaspersky PURE or Kaspersky Internet Security 2013

Note about Kaspersky, you can occasionally get them for free on NewEgg.com or Fry's Electronics, usually when a new version os released they give a full price rebate.

I use avast on my PC, and always recommend it to my friends and family. Never had any issues with getting a virus, so I guess it's working

Vipre is great, I have been using it like 3 months and I havent had a false positive, and it also fast on detecting malware.
