1.1 seems to work for me, but where is the back up saved or how is it called?
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update
Assuming windows 7/Vista
Zune can be used to restore it.

This may sound kind of basic but I am pretty sure the phone has to be unlocked.
I JUST got the handshake error and all I did was reboot the phone and it worked when I unlocked the device BEFORE trying to backup.
Hi!
Does this work on an unlocked device?
In first post among requirements it is not mentioned to be so and I guess it is working with an unlocked WP7 phone too. I have no chance to test this.
Am I correct?
Regards,
Cina.
Dev unlocked or not it will work fine. I mentioned "Unlocked" earlier but I was referring to the screen not being locked.Well as stated above, it didn't need to be unlocked the first time.
Just in case though, can you please specify the unlocking method you used please?
And if anyone else on this thread has been running this BackUp tool with their phone locked, please sing out so we can settle this question.
Thanks!

I know you might of beat on this somewhere but, will this backup at the file level or Rom level....?
What I mean is I want to attempt Mago beta (files posted around here) and if it hoses my phone for some reason, can I restore with this to get my phone back up and running again ?
Can I just assume as long as I can get the phone connected to Zune, I can restore it back to it's current (at backup time) state no matter what version of the build or software is/was ?
Any issues locked or unlocked ?
Dev unlocked or not it will work fine. I mentioned "Unlocked" earlier but I was referring to the screen not being locked.
Have you got any experience or knowledge of the data folder and the files *.dat inside it? I assume this is an exact (segmented) copy of the internal "drives" of the device which is restored bit by bit. BUT IT IS ENCRYPTED. (Bitlocker?)
Have anyone tried to change anything in DAT files and restore it? Might be a chance to change developer registry settings in backup and restore it to device and unlock the phone. Just an idea.
FYI, I was able to get the command line to finish the backup on a Samsung Focus, but it then proceeded to put the Focus into "Restore" or "Upgrade" mode, tried to apply the update, failed, and promptly deleted all of my backup files. I tried yanking the plug but that left the Focus in "Restore" mode no matter how many times I restarted. I also tried to kill the app, but when I reconnected using USB, the process quickly killed my backup files.
Good thing I'm not on 7392 yet - I'm using that and a debranding technique to backup, but something is off somewhere for me. Pretty sure I followed all steps as directed - got PKS, WP Support Tools, was able to run manual backup (until the restore/upgrade failed), was able to use the GUI (again - until the update failed). No success any way to get a backup except by applying an official update in my case.
If you do the restore via commandline the error is probably "Version Mismatch" (updatewp.exe /restore)
Can you get back to 7712? You might be able to get this to load if you are 7712 instead of 7720.
Edit: I downloaded 4.7, extracted the MSI for the zunewmdu and found the file with out having to install 4.7 over my 4.8 install.
I zipped it up and attached it to this post, if you download it, please hit thanks for me !
