Nice, I was just about to start searching for one of these. Now if I can find a dock that's not too high I will be doing great! :D

What about a voltage regulator? I know the cars voltage fluctuates from 12-14v and ist clean power. and then there is amperage. Ive seen plenty of 12v devices fry with just direct 12v to the car.

The adapter I made used a LC filter made with parts I had lying around. Radio Shack sells a noise supressor kit containing a capacitor and inductor suitable for that use. Also use a 2A fuse and a reverse polarity protection diode, maybe a large 15V zener as well. (My car, a Prius, actually uses a switching power supply to power the 12V outlets and should not need any additional filtering, but it's still a good idea.)
