Did you connect the device to the guest system? Every VM-Software I know allows only either connecting to the host or guest. So if you are able to see your device in Windows it might not be connected to the guest system.

I know you can't use this on the 900, but can you add that to the FAQ so people don't need to ask?

Sent from my Lumia 900 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App

You can use fdisk to get a list of all partitions. However if you have no Linux knowledge I would recommend you that you refrain from this method. I also recommend creating a dump of the Partition you want to flash over.

Q: How to flash lumia 710/800 with NCS
A: 1) Place the downloaded files in the directory : “C:\Programm Data\Nokia\Packages\Products\[Your Phone RM]\”
2) Download and install Nokia Care Suite
3) Open it, click on File->Open Product, select your phone. (RM-801 for Lumia 800 and RM-803 for Lumia 710, check your phone’s RM on the box label)
4) Right click on the ‘Programming’ button on the left. Click on ‘Recovery’.
5) Click ‘Update List’, and select the firmware it finds.
6) Check ‘update automatically’ and ‘USB dead phone flashing’ and click ‘next’.
7) Follow the on-screen instructions and turn your phone off.
8) It’ll say ‘application has lost the connection with your phone’. Turn your phone on at this point holding the volume-up button and quickly press ‘retry’.
9) You’ll see the flashing procedure starting and it will be finished within a few minutes and your phone will be ready to use.
