There are many Guides, some could use a bit of updating. I feel like this post will clear up some of basic questions for new 3D Hboot 1.5x owners that I've seen repeated in the Q&A. I've referenced the ones I found helpful and have tried to provide clarification/updated links where appropriate from what I've learned on my Sprint CDMA Evo3D.
In no order, thanks to Zedomax, JTniggle, Afuddyduddy, Football, Mr.Esp, Scrosler, Mikeyxda, Attn1, DC13, TrevE, xHausx, JoeyKrim, TwoLazyG, Unkownforce, Closeone, Chad.Goodman, CWM Team (Koush), & TWRP for all the previous info.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DISCLAIMER: I'm not a dev, nor do I play one on t.v. Use the information and links at your own risk. READ and UNDERSTAND what your doing before flashing is the best bet.
I take no responsibility or credit for the information.

Edit: This info 'primarily' relates to the Sprint CDMA Evo3D. I am not familiar with phones flashed to other carriers (Vmobile, Boost, etc) and flashing Sprint Evo3D Ruu's etc may wipe out your carrier settings. If you know whether or not any of this works with other CDMA carriers, please feel free to respond.

SDX Version of this thread

------------------------------------ Background Info You Should Know ------------------------------------------

To get into BOOTLOADER (Hboot): press [vol down] + [pwr] at the same time when powered off.
(You will need to disable the "Fast boot" option in "Settings -> Power" or pull the battery).
(You can also enter the bootloader from Android OS by typing “adb reboot bootloader” at ADB prompt)

From Hboot, you can select to boot into "Fastboot" (Fastboot USB when connected) and Recovery (if installed).

Note1:
To use "fastboot cmds" from Windows Cmd Prompt you MUST be in the "fastboot" mode within the bootloader.

Note2:
To use "adb cmds" from Windows Cmd Prompt you MUST have phone booted to the "Android OS" with "Debugging" enabled (under settings) or apparently any mode except "fastboot" and phone connected via USB.

Note3:
- go to Settings -> Power -> Fast boot (uncheck/disable it).
This is like "sleep" mode for Windows except for Android OS, where phone doesn't fully shutdown and is different from bootloader's "Fastboot" mode. It will prevent you from booting to bootloader manually.
- start CMD Prompt’s within your android sdk tools or platform tools folder or where ever you copied the ADB.exe, fastboot.exe, AdbWinApi.dll, Unlock_Code.bin, etc files to.
(Win7 shortcut: locate/open adb folder, press [shift] + [left click] and choose "open cmd window here" )

Note4:
ADB & Fastboot filenames/commands have to EXACTLY match (cAsE too). This includes the recovery filename.img file that is in the adb/fastboot folder AND installed on the phone to work...

Example:
fastboot flash recovery command:
Type: fastboot flash recovery YourRecoveryFilename.img

Fastboot boot to recovery cmd:
Type: fastboot boot YourRecoveryFilename.img

Important: Want to understand your options? See Evo3d HBoots/S-off Differences & Rooting Background Info

----------------------------- Juopunutbear/ControlBear S-OFF hboot 1.5x(no downgrade) 8/10/12 --------------------------------
Globatron & the Unlimited.io folks have a "Wire Trick" option for Hboot 1.5x & S-Off as an alternative to the Hboot downgrade.
Note: YOU MUST HTC UNLOCK 1ST & BE RUNNING A ROOTED STOCK ROM IN ORDER FOR THIS METHOD TO WORK.
Quote:

JuopunutBear is the first release from team Unlimited.IO. It is a tool for gaining (radio) S-OFF on a number of HTC phones and optionally flashing a custom Juopunutbear bootloader that supports full write/erase fastboot commands. JuopunutBear does not provide root access, however with S-OFF this is a simple process of flashing superuser from recovery.

Support:
Support for our tools is via IRC channel #unlimited on freenode ONLY. We DO NOT provide support, instructions, or downloads via XDA.
If you do not have an IRC client you can use this link.

Using how-to guides, "kits" and using other instructions on XDA to S-OFF your device is not recommended and will not be supported by Team Unlimited. If you want the best experience and results - go direct to the source. Dealing with support issues through the forums is inefficient and posts may get lost in long support threads, of which we would have too many to actively monitor. We have therefore decided that all support should be through our IRC channel. This will allow us to help you in real-time and through the whole process.

(XDA) Ramjet73's [Guide] Quick And Dirty Evo3D Root & S-OFF (Sprint/Virgin Mobile)
- This is the "unofficial" thread/method I used on my 2nd Evo3D and is very well Setup and Supported by Ramjet73 (recommended).

- This WAS the official XDA thread. Please see website: http://unlimited.io/juopunutbear.htm for "Official Support".

Note: Jbear now works on the new Sprint 2.89 base with Hboot 1.58 (& VM with Hboot 1.57).

------------------------------ Ultimate Recovery Tool 3.1 (Unbrick, Downgrade, VM Radio Fix/Reset) 5/14/12 -------------------------------------
Unknownforce did it again! This time its a complete tool to downgrade or fix almost everything.
(XDA) Unknownforce's [TOOL] Ultimate Recovery Tool 3.1 (Unbrick, Downgrade, VM Radio Fix/Reset)

And Closeone has a LiveCD again for us "non-linux" users in 3rd post of Unknownforce's thread.

UPDATE: Confirmed to work with Hboot 1.58/2.89 & 2.95 FW by "Bricking it Twice" See THIS POST

And this help thread/example from June 2014...

----------------- Original HBoot 1.50 Downgrade to Hboot 1.40 (Replaced by the Ultimate Recovery Tool Above) ----------------------
UnknownForce, appears to have done the impossible and has SUCCESSFULLY DOWNGRADED HBOOT 1.50. What was once a complicated process has been repackaged into something simpler for us average users using Closeone's LiveCD. This is the original method and both of these threads are very well supported by the authors & the community.

Note: YOU MUST BE ON FULL STOCK 2.17 RUU (LOCKED/RELOCKED) TO USE THIS METHOD.
UPDATE: Reported to work with Hboot 1.58/2.89 FW by "Bricking it Twice" See THIS POST

I've successfully downgrade with this. The process is updated and even easier with Closeone's LiveCD. Here's the info:

2. My Hboot 1.5x HTC Unlocking References: (once unlocked have a look at recovery/rooting below)
FYI, the OTA update apparently won’t allow the “Unlock” to work/get step 13 error, so just run the Full RUU.exe or RUU.zip. See “Running Stock RUU Reference” further down.

OPTION 1:
(HTCdev) Download & install needed SDK/Java/HTC files. Create an account and unlock, you’ll have to do most of this anyway: http://htcdev.com/bootloader/

- (SDX) Copy of Original HTC Unlocking Instructions form HTCdev.com (plus some extra step 13 notes I added):

NOTE 2: You may get a bad DL, Check your downloads against the MD5's. There's an off chance you may need to try a different usb cable.
With S-On, the only way to update the radio/fw is with the RUU!

Note 3: If you previously did the HTC Unlock, you'd have to "RELOCK" BEFORE running the RUU.
To do this from fastboot type: fastboot oem lock

Note 4: If your still on earlier Fw (ie 2.08.651.3), you can still use those RUU’s.
(Must be same or greater than the firmware version on your phone if you are HTC Unlocked/S-ON).

OPTION 1 - RUU.exe info: (Fastboot USB mode preferred)
(MS Windows Program that works with phone in "Fastboot USB" mode or booted to Android OS)
See My Gathered RUU .exe/.zip Links to get the files (from post 11 below).

RUU.exe HOW-To directions I pulled previously:
(Pulled from the HTC Ruu. Same for all Ruu.exe versions)

• Standby or hibernation mode of your PC has been disabled.
• Close all running applications on the PC. (MY Note: including Antivirus)

Important Do not interact with your Android phone unless the RUU wizard instructs you to do so.

OPTION 2 - RUU.zip info: (Make sure you have plenty of battery/charge left!)
See My Gathered RUU .exe/.zip Links to get the files (from post 11 below).

I prefer the .exe version but “FULL” RUU.zips may work for you (must be renamed PG86IMG.zip).

From Scrosler's zip Directions : http://forums.androidcentral.com/htc...-versions.html

You will not need any special drivers loaded, etc...
1.Download the stock ROM ZIP image: and rename it "PG86IMG.zip"
2.Copy it to SD Card
3.Reboot phone into hboot mode by holding volume down and then press power.
Keep volume down held until you boot into hboot mode.
4.In hboot mode the phone will scan the SD card with the image. Once it finds it will ask you if you want to update. Press "Power" to update.
5.Wait.... For a while. When it gets to "system" it will loop a few times. Its quite nerve wracking actually but after about 5 or 6 times it will complete.
6.Once the entire flash is complete it will prompt you to "press power to reboot." Press power and your phone will reboot to 100% stock ROM.

MPG Edit: (Optional for S-Off Phones. N/A for HTC Unlocked (S-ON) Phones).
7.Once the phone has been flashed you will need to set the secure flag on the radio for S-ON to do this use "fastboot oem writesecureflag 3" Make sure you are in fastboot menu. To do this power down and hold power down while powering up and select fastboot. I have attached the fast boot and adb files to the post.

IMPORTANT: - If you are S-OFF, congrats! You can flash anything and don't have to set it back to s-on, but...
TO SET THE SECURITY FLAG TO S-ON, YOU MUST HAVE A STOCK HBOOT INSTALLED FIRST OR YOU WILL BRICK!

4. My Flash Recovery/Root (Su) Notes 2-13-13
4. My Flash Recovery/Root (Su) Notes:

There are additional notes from my "problems" thread that may help and the OP at the very top.
(You can use the Recovery.img of your choice, some won’t work though! See issues thread below) :
(XDA) Hboot 1.5 ROM/Recovery install issues (fastboot/FlashimageGui) & Scenarios
(SDX) Hboot 1.5 ROM/Recovery install issues (fastboot/FlashimageGui) & Scenarios

Edit: If you get "remote: not allowed" while flashing a recovery, you may not be HTC Unlocked. (If you are S-Off, stock Hboots will have this issue too).
See the Hboot/S-Off Differences Thread for specifics.

Get the SuperUser zip and pick a Recovery.img file:

UPDATED Su: Latest from Su site (pick one and put on the root of sdcard).
- Superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
- MD5: b3c89f46f014c9df7d23b94d37386b8a _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ MD5: fc462fa0630379edbe10006b1d19d9b1
- ChainsDD's Site: http://androidsu.com/superuser/

Revolutionary CWM from Attn1's thread (Also at HtcEvoHacks.com): This version is rock solid for S-On/S-Off and without any known issues that I've heard of.
- Cwm-4.0.1.4-shooter.img (put in ADB/fastboot folder & keep it there.)
- MD5: 296b356378f70d963081ad07a1507ff0
- http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...0#post14693680

CWM Touch v5 (Latest) : I tried the new CWM Touch Recovery v5.8.0.2 and it worked fairly well (USB Mount/Charge don't work yet, and I have had repeatable issues flashing "superwipe" zips & some kernel zips). NO UPDATES/FIXES IN A LONG TIME.
- recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.0.2-shooter.img (put in ADB/fastboot folder & keep it there)
- MD5: 5f0e65bf2e408a9b39b7b9fc9ce63ce8
- Direct DL: http://download.clockworkmod.com/rec....2-shooter.img

TWRP 2.4.1.0 (& 2.2.0): Includes HTC DumLock, but using it is optional. Very solid overall, but some issues reported in previous releases with full wipe/formatting & restoring backups. Many new features in 2.2 (I haven't tried it yet)
- openrecovery-twrp-2.4.1.0-shooter.img (put in ADB/fastboot folder & keep it there)
- PG86IMG-twrp-shooter-2.2.0.zip (Older version flashable from bootloader/rename PG86IMG.zip first.)
- HTC DumLock Instructions page (Hboot 1.5x): http://www.teamw.in/project/htcdumlock
- Main TWRP 2 Page
(Includes GooManager app to install any supported recovery from Android OS, as well as other install methods)

4ext Recovery (RECOMMENDED): As a workaround to "fastbooting" into one of the above recoveries, I'm going to point out 4ext Touch Recovery b/c it works well & w/o any significant issues. It is easily installed from android via an app AND allows HTC Unlocked users a simple/consistent method for flashing roms & kernels w/o fastboot/pc and it's compatible with CWM's backups.
- Direct DL: http://www.4ext.net/ddl/shooter/recovery.zip
- recovery.img (Extract from the Recovery.zip, put in ADB/fastboot folder & keep it there)
- MD5: varies based on current version
- Main 4EXT Recovery Touch with SmartFlash Thread
(Make sure to GET/INSTALL the 4ext Recovery Control/Updater app "Trial" from the market afterwards!)

If you prefer a version of 4ext installable from the bootloader as a PG86IMG.zip, see RamJet73's Post.

Note:
ADB & Fastboot filenames/commands have to EXACTLY match (cAsE too) the recovery filename.img file that is in the adb folder and installed on the phone to work...

Example:
fastboot flash recovery command:
Type: fastboot flash recovery YourRecoveryFilename.img

Fastboot boot to recovery cmd:
Type: fastboot boot YourRecoveryFilename.img

Scenario 7 – Load CWM Recovery 4.0.1.4 (4ext, or TWRP 2.x) & Su via fastboot/recovery
Reminder:
- These start from Android os with phone connected via USB (usb debug enabled)
- goto Settings -> Power -> Fast boot (uncheck/disable it)
- start CMD Prompt within your android sdk tools or platform tools folder or where ever you copied the ADB.exe, fastboot.exe, etc files to.
(Win7 shortcut: locate/open folder, press [shift] + [left click] and choose "open cmd window here" )

type: adb reboot bootloader (phone boots to hboot, should see "fastboot USB" )

type: fastboot flash recovery cwm-4.0.1.4-shooter.img (flash CWM Recovery via fastboot cmd)
(for 4ext replace with: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img )
(for Twrp replace with: fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.2.0-shooter.img )

sending 'recovery' (4832 KB)...
OKAY [ 1.154s]
writing 'recovery'...
OKAY [ 10.124s]
finished. total time: 11.279s

Type: fastboot boot cwm-4.0.1.4-shooter.img (boot to CWM Recovery via fastboot cmd)
(for 4ext replace with: fastboot boot recovery.img )
(for Twrp replace with: fastboot boot openrecovery-twrp-2.2.0-shooter.img )

downloading 'boot.img'...
OKAY [ 1.154s]
booting...
OKAY [ -0.000s]
finished. total time: 1.154s

(phone enters “Revolutionary CWM v4.0.1.4 or 4ext) ->Note: You may want a full backup before Installing Su.
select: install zip from sdcard
locate file: su-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip and install it.
reboot to OS

Once in Android OS, Verify Root/Busybox with JoeyKrim's "Root Check" app. I had to DL and install "BusyBox" from market "default settings". You probably will too (Is it needed? IDK).

Note: You should definitely make a backup via Recovery before doing anything else.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

This is more or less from the follow guide that I followed (look familiar?) :

Just a note: You can add the word "recovery" to the Recovery.img filename ( recovery-cwm-4.0.1.4-shooter.img ) and should be able to flash it from android with Jk's FlashImage app and skip flashing it with fastboot. You can then boot to the recovery (with quickboot or with phone off.. PWR + Vol DN) and flash the SU zip from recovery. But, you will have issues restoring backups if you don't enter recovery via fastboot cmd). More "scenarios" in my thread.

6. CWM Recovery Backup, Format/Wipe, Restore, & Flash 8-22-12
6. CWM Recovery Backup, Format/Wipe, Restore, & Flash: ! MAKE SURE YOU READ THE NOTES IN THE OP AT THE TOP FIRST !

You CAN get into RECOVERY by: press [vol down] + [pwr] at the same time when powered off.
You CAN enter Hboot and select to boot into "Fastboot" (Fastboot USB when connected) and Recovery (if installed).

BUT… YOU MUST enter recovery via “fastboot boot” command if you want to flash kernels (ie, flash a Rom/Restore a backup). If you enter your recovery this way, you should be able to flash nearly everything like normal.

NOTE: Yes, workarounds include FlashImage, & TWRP w/DumLock, but you should get comfortable with Fastboot first!
If you are comfortable with Fastboot and want to try one of the workarounds, here's where to look:
- Joeykrim's FlashImageGui ( My extra Flashimage notes in Post 3 above )
- TeamWin's TWRP Recovery 2.0 with HtcDumlock baked in (Universal Option for any recovery also available)
- Universal DumLock Tutorial by Zedomax
- 4EXT Recovery Touch v1.0.0.5 RC1 with SmartFlash for s-on
(4ext recovery is easily installed from android via an app AND allows HTC Unlocked users a simple/consistent method for flashing roms & kernels w/o fastboot/pc and it's compatible with CWM's backups)

Sdcard/clockworkmod/ (This is the folder CWM & 4ext Recovery creates/uses.)
/backup (recovery's backup of /system, /data, /boot.img, etc. are saved here by date. You can edit the filename.)
/download (If you use CWM Rom Manager, it will place its downloads here)

After the phone has a Custom recovery, the recovery can be used to:
1) Flash/install .zip files:
- New/rooted kernels, including boot.img files (controls how the o.s. works with hardware)
- Roms (complete /system & /data file with kernel, custom apps, modded settings)
- Bootanimations (should be correct resolution)
- Other system improvements
- Themes (modify look of phone/menus etc. Specific to each phone (Evo3D) & FW/radio Base (ie 2.08.651.3)
Must clear "dalvik cache" & flash "deodexed template" or deodexed Rom, boot to system, before flashing each theme).

2) Make .tar backups of /system, /data, & /cache. Also backs up /boot ( boot.img or Kernel), /recovery (recovery.img ), /wimax (wimax.img ), that can be restored, usually together.

Note: Format the appropriate partition before restoring. (Usually format/wipe the first 3.)
It’s a good idea to make an initial stock backup right after you install the custom recovery. Then you can just format, restore the backup, and relock to be full stock again.

3) Format/wipe the 3 main partitions and flash other partitions (Evo3D default filesystem is EXT4 ):
/system (o.s., system apps)
/data (google acct, app & phone settings, downloaded/installed apps)
/cache (used by o.s. to access info/apps, includes "/dalvik cache")

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Controls:
[ Vol Up/Dwn ] = move or highlight selection
[ Power ] = select item/option (press all the way down)

Note: On CWM Touch version HW controls still work. Mount USB Storage & USB Charging don’t work yet.

Unlocked HBoot 1.50 and S-On Notes:

- Can’t flash Boot Logo’s with HBoot 1.50 and S-On
- Can’t flash Radios (for cellular data) with Hboot 1.50 and S-On. Must “relock” bootloader and flash official Ruu’s.
- Must enter recovery via “fastboot boot” command if you want to flash kernels (ie, flash a Rom/Restore a backup).

How to Flash a Zip (Generally):
Place the .zip on the SDcard (or Sdcard/zip or similar folder of your choice)
Boot to recovery via fastboot command. Type: fastboot boot YourRecoveryFilename.img (Not always necessary)
-> ADVANCED -> WIPE DALVIK CACHE (habit of mine)
-> INSTALL ZIP FROM SD CARD -> CHOOSE ZIP FROM SDCARD
-> LEAVE RECOVERY -> REBOOT TO SYSTEM

How to flash a rom (Geneally):
- Make a backup in recovery first (/system, /data, /cache, etc)
- Format/wipe the 3 partitions as appropriate.
(some Rom zips will do this for you, but may require a specific recovery coding such as “Edify” in CWM).
- Flash the Rom.zip (or any rom's zip depending on your baseband)
- Reboot to system, let it load, Verify functions

How to flash a theme (Geneally):
- Go to recovery, Wipe " Dalvik Cache ",
- Flash the " Stock Deodex Template" or Deodexed Rom (Depending on your baseband)
- Reboot to system, let it load, Verify functions
- Go To recovery, ADVANCED, Wipe "dalvik Cache"
- Flash the theme you want, ie GreenSteel.zip
- Reboot to system, let it load, Verify functions

Note: Anytime you wipe dalvik cache it will take longer to boot the first time.

Back up & Restore your file system with CWM recovery (DETAILED)

1 - (Enter Recovery via fastboot command prompt. Type: fastboot boot YourRecoveryFilename.img )
-> BACKUP AND RESTORE -> BACKUP (This will separately backup: boot.img, /system, /data, /cache, wimax.img, etc)

* NOTE: you can stop here if you just want a backup*

2- (Format Manually through Recovery)
-> WIPE DATA/FACTORY RESET ( this will format the DATA & CACHE partitions for you in one shot )
-> MOUNTS AND STORAGE -> FORMAT SYSTEM

-> FORMAT DATA (Optionally there if needed, i.e. to restore only data partition)
-> FORMAT CACHE (Optionally there if needed)

4- (Restore Manually through Recovery)
-> BACKUP AND RESTORE -> CHOOSE YOUR BACKUP
-> RESTORE (This will restore all parts of the backup: /system, /data, & /cache, /boot [ boot.img or Kernel], /recovery [recovery.img], /wimax [wimax.img], SD-EXT if setup )

Note: If there is more than one, the numbers are a date/time stamp (ie: 2012-02-16.06.14.40 is Feb.16, 2012 at 6:14AM), so choose the appropriate one. I typically change the name later, ie: "2012-02-16 651.5MeanRom6 ".

4.1- ADVANCED OPTION (Restore portions of backups individually)
-> ADVANCED RESTORE -> CHOOSE YOUR BACKUP IMAGE ( /system, /data, /cache, /boot, /recovery, /wimax, SD-EXT)
-> RESTORE

5- (Reboot)
-> LEAVE RECOVERY -> REBOOT TO SYSTEM

Flash a ROM with CWM recovery (DETAILED. From Scenario 6)
1 - (Enter Recovery via fastboot command prompt. Type: fastboot boot YourRecoveryFilename.img )
-> BACKUP AND RESTORE -> BACKUP (This will separately backup: boot.img, /system, /data, /cache, wimax.img, etc)

2- (Format Manually through Recovery)
-> WIPE DATA/FACTORY RESET ( this will format the DATA & CACHE partitions for you in one shot )
-> MOUNTS AND STORAGE -> FORMAT SYSTEM

3- (Flash ROM’s zip)
-> INSTALL ZIP FROM SD CARD
-> CHOOSE ZIP FROM SD CARD (i.e. MeanRom.zip)

4- (Reboot)
-> LEAVE RECOVERY -> REBOOT TO SYSTEM

This is fantastic information, and I firmly believe this should stay in the dev section. The unlocking process is quite possibly the "scariest" aspect of everything we do here; anything that makes it easier (such as this thread) should be here.

Great work!

My Gathered RUU .exe/.zip Links: 9-16-13
Here are some of the RUU EXE/ZIP links that I have come across.

Note: If you are using these RUU's keep trying to find an Ruu zip (or exe version with phone in fastboot) that matches your installed version that works.

I will point out that Just because there's an MD5 to verify against, doesn't mean the file is good! Notice that some of the "same" files have different MD5's. I don't know why.

Main RUU Threads/Download Links: (.exe & .zip)

PPcGeeks Rom Collection Links

Shipped-Roms.com

TeamDirt.me's Link to AndroidRUU.com Shooter RUU's

Football's Shipped Rom Collection Links
(Note: Links Removed. Sad to see this excellent source move on. Thanks Football!).

Other References:
(XDA) Gu1Dry's HTC Evo 3D (CDMA) Radios [PG86IMG.zip]
