CWM is not necessary. All you need to do is enter in recovery (it can be the official one) by pressing volume+ and power button at the same time and choose "apply update.zip" or similar.
You only have to have the update.zip on your sd card.
I get the following error when I try that:

I can't help you much more because I'm using another rom and recovery, sorry...
Buy try to install CWM recovery which is on my signature and then flash the update...

I don't want to root the phone (the owner doesn't want me to). According the the chinese thread at Huawei, it seems there are others who get the same error. Thanks for the help anyway
