1.W-CDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) is a wideband spread-spectrum channel access method.
2.It uses the direct-sequence spread spectrum method and asynchronous code division multiple access.
3.The aim is to achieve higher speeds and support more users compared to, most GSM systems based on, time division multiple access (TDMA).
4.Therefore W-CDMA is typically an air interface standard pertaining to by and large Radio access.
5.Besides this, WCDMA is also to some extent a data interface standard.
1.UMTS is a 3G mobile telecommunications system and is a complete network system, and is an application oriented package.
2.UMTS uses W-CDMA as the underlying air interface but besides this UMTS also covers the radio access network (UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network; UTRAN), the core network (Mobile Application Part; MAP) and USIM based authentication routines.
Can we then say UMTS is a full fledged system and one part of it is WCDMA ?
