There are a lot of conflicting methods for rooting the Star N9500 on the web so this is my attempt to explain exactly what to do to root the Star N9500/MTK 6859 phones.

You will need:

PdaNe+t for pc (NOT Win8) or mac
Motochopper exploit

Optional for custom rom with android 4.2.2 and cwm recovery Many thanks to Petrucco and freedgt over at http://www.patrucco.com for the rom and assistance with installing and testing.
Flashtool
USB Vcom Driver

Rooting Method:

Download Motochopper exploit and extract to your location of choice.

Connect your phone to your pc by usb cable and turn it on

Navigate to the location of the motochopper exploit

Double-click "run.bat"

When it says "press any key to continue", do just that

If it stalls at "device found", start device manager and right-click a few times to bring up the menu with "scan for hardware changes" and click it
It should then install the drivers for your phone and the exploit should finish.

When it says "Press Enter to reboot and exit" do it

Your phone will now reboot and be rooted. Install SuperSU and a root checker from Google Play. Run the root checker and it should show the phone is rooted and you have Super User access.

Flash custom rom with cwm

This custom rom is really just the stock rom but upgrades to android 4.2.2 with a few added feature and tweaks. The camera app gives a lot more quality options and the gps locks on much faster. Installing it now gives you clockwork mod recovery (vol up + power) instead of just factory mode (vol down + power). You will need to check your lcd panel type before flashing as there are 2 types. Make a note - write it down!

Flashing Method (may remove root)

Download and install PdaNet+

Download and extract Star N9500 STOCK ROOT CWM 4.2.2 rom

Download and extract SP_Flash_Tool_v3.1308.0.125.rar

Download and extract usb vcom driver

Power your phone off and remove the battery for a few seconds

Replace the battery and leave the phone off

Navigate to where you extracted SP_Flash_Tool_v3.1308.0.125

Double-click Flash_Tool.exe

Click the "scatter-loading" button, navigate to where you extracted Star_N9500_STOCK_ROOT_CWM_4.2.2.rar (/Star N9500 STOCK 4.2.2/)

USE NORMAL SCATTER FOR LCD DRIVER LT050ANKP019A

USE SCATTER2 FOR LCD DRIVER 1-RX_499NT_598A

Press F9 or click the Download button. Do NOT click upgrade as this will semi-brick your phone!

Do NOT click upgrade as this will semi-brick your phone!

Do NOT click upgrade as this will semi-brick your phone!

Connect your phone to your pc by usb

Run PdaNet+ and install the usb vcom drivers

The phone will be detected and the flash will install:
A red bar will fill, followed by a purple bar, then yellow and finally a green circle showing the flash has been successful.

Exit the application and remove the battery from your phone for a few seconds

Replace the battery and hold the power button while holding vol up button

The blue android will appear - keep holding

The cwm recovery screen will appear with the recovery options. Release the buttons.

You navigate the options using vol up/down and select using the power button

After flashing this rom you may lose root access (I did), so download and install SuperSU from play store and check if still rooted. If not run the rooting instructions again to have a fully rooted N9500 with cwm recovery. ***UPDATE*** 4.2.2 rom leaves superuser intact.

If you're not sure how to use this guide, get someone else to do it for you. If there's anything I got wrong or missed out, let me know.

Thank you for compiling this description!
Additional note: After flashing this ROM there is still root access IF you reinstall SuperSU.apk again (from market of from SD card if you have saved it before). Titanium backup which needs root works immediately after reinstalling SuperSU

Yeah I tried that and it didn't work for me so I had to root again.

After rooting and flashing (what is going well, no errors) i get black screen after booting. Phone is dead. After flashing de stock ROM V2 20130514 the phone is functioning OK. Is there a problem with the LCD driver?

It appears there are 2 differnt lcd types available. Have a look here, check which lcd type you have and use the correct scatter file. All should be well then.

How can I check which LCD type my N9500 have? Is there a relationship between the LCD type and the front camera?
The front camera is not working to.

Your front camera isn't working with the stock rom? Did you try a factory reset from within the settings menu? You could also try both roms and use the one that works. Flashing the "wrong" one won't brick your phone.

I try a factory reset, no result for the front camera. Try to flash the suggested ROM's from Needrom: Star-N9500-STOCK-4.2.2Dual-scatter. With both scatter types.

The only ROM thats functioning with my N9500 is this one, from Needrom. Every time a brick my N9500 this is the ROM who brings it alive (sadly without proper functioning front camera)

So I think I have LCD DRIVER 1-RX_499NT_598A

I try'd several ROM's (4.2.1 and 4.2.2) from Needrom. The above ROM is the only one who gives no black screen after booting (or not booting at all).

The only problem which the ROM have is that my front camera is not functioning. Is there no way to fix the front camera without flashing the whole new ROM?

You know that there's a "pure" stock rom on needrom don't you, one that doesn't have any cwm/root on it? (the site's offline at the minute so I can't get the link right now). Also, is it possible that theres a hardware issue with the camera? One of mine developed a usb, audio and wifi problem and is being replaced by the supplier.

With the origional ROM from factory the front camera was working, so no hardware issues. First I root the origional ROM with Motochopper, then i flashed the Custom ROM Star N9500 V2 20130514 (with is working on my N9500). Gone to try the "pure"stock ROM as you suggested, I think this is right one: ROM Official Star N9500 : N9500.20130412_e2006_v89_jbaol1 from Needrom. Let you now if the front camera is working with this ROM.
Thanks for your help and patience!

So this morning I flashed the pure stock ROM:

Official Star N9500 : N9500.20130510_e2006_v89_jbaol1
Flashtool: SP_Flash_Tool_v3.1252.1.104

Install ROM :
To unpack Flash run Flash_tool.exe
Select a the MT6589_Android_scatter_emmc.txt in ROM
Click Flash_tool.exe interface Firmware-> Upgrade
Phone after taking the battery in put something
Connect the data cable
Brush finished with green circles appears

After flashing and the green circle OK appears the phone is not starting up, no reaction on the power button at all!

So flashed the only working ROM is this one:

simply official rom STOCK

Is there something i missed in the flashing proces?

Why only this ROM (simply official rom STOCK, Filename: Star N9500 V2 20130514) is working (boot's after flashing) and all the others not?
Am I not patient enough, how long do you have to keep the power button in after flashing?
Is there someting wrong with my CWK (I flashed "star n9500 recoveryCWM.V.6.0.2.8 B.M")?
I always use the recomended flashtool for the ROM.

The only reason I want flash is getting back a working front camera with a need for video conferencing.

Do I have a newer (e2006v20_v89_jbao11_didi) MS-board that's no compliant with the ROM?
