If you have trouble with this tut, try using the nexus root toolkit. It does all the work for you.
I used wuuugs toolkit v.1.6.6 and it worked flawless.

Just finished following your easy method of unlocking the bootloader and rooting the Nexus 7 and I have root access! Thank you very much and it was easy as you said. Looking forward for more of your comments on this product.
guys, i need to return this device now, got a reboot and keep getting system UIDs inconsistent errors...google stuff not working anymore, i guess i had one last bad reboot :lol:, now i lost all my data 
need to wipe partion.... how do i return to factory stock..do i wipe data, partition, do factory reset and then LOCK the bootloader? thanks, not sure if i want to exchanget for another one or wait for the 32gb LTE model in canada

Download the Android SDK and install a custom recovery. After flash Super Su update via recovery. Toolkits are good if your lazy, but not always 100% reliable.
I will make it easy for you by typing the commands for you
Turn on usb debuging
Open up ADB via command prompt
type
1)adb reboot bootloader
2) fastboot flash recovery (name of recovery),img
Reboot into android
Load super su if not done already then get into recovery by typing
3) adb reboot recovery
( if previously loaded )Use volume key to get to recovery on nexus, press power on recovery
4) flash super su in recovery
