wow its so simple. i managed to root my HTC magic 1.5 using the 1.6.2 beta. but when i open the superuser permission and go to log, the superuser permissions would stop unexpectedly and have to force close.
I had a perfect SPL, too but it worked without problems!

but i can't install 1.6.2 beta : with astro file manager it gives me this :
unable to open android1.6.2beta.apk as apk file
