GPS Fix from Crypted
Ok here's another thing to think about:
after Dunc referred us to that GPS Fix from crypted which seems to work very well i had a short chat with Crypted on two questions: #1 what happens if he decides to drop support for his fix (taking down the servers), he replied he will maintain them as long as this fix is needed, e.g. within two years he reckons hard- and software will have evolved past the need for this patch. #2 was: what about the GPS1_CLEANUP_ENABLED line for Gingerbread? This is the interesting thing. He did not hear of this bug within GB before but went straight on to test it on 4 different devices since he never had switching issues reported or seen himself. He could not find a big difference for the switching (well, it might still be different on the HD2, we never know) but he found increased refresh-rates of incoming GPS Data and much increased battery drain! He reckons that the increased refresh rates cause the high battery drain.
So. Now we sit here thinking about whether to live with bad GPS on/off switching or with increased Battery drain. Is that the situation with which we are left?
I don't think so. At the moment i believe that the increased drain only occurs when GPS is switched on, so the drain is somewhat controllable. I for instance have GPS enabled in my car. There i have got a charger. So it doesn't matter.
But on the other hand: it could be different for others. I think it just is something Dan should investigate into and maybe alter the GPS setup. Talking to Crypted on this could help too. He seems to know a few things.
Here is his thread for looking up his work: http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1262652
