sounds like a botched conversion.

did you test on another player on your xoom to see if it does the same thing? are these rips from disks you own? or are they downloads off the net?

did you make any adjustments to the stock settings in the program?

were you multitasking on the same computer that was also doing the conversions?

what movies?
Tested on the stock movie player, and also moboplayer. Both play the same way. They are downloads, but work perfectly if played on pc, until after the rip. The new mp4 after converting skips even while on the PC so it is pretty obvious there was an error in the conversion somewhere. No adjustments were made after selecting the XOOM HQ2 settings. I was maybe multi-tasking a little. But no more than just surfing the web. I tried 2 movies, first was Tron 1080p, and the second was How to Train A Dragon, also 1080p for my kiddo (And me I suppose. Freaking awesome kids movie!)

When I get home from work I'll just try it again on the XOOM HQ1 settings and see whats up. It could be different. Is there a noticeable difference between HQ1 and HQ2 (besides the file size obviously) when viewing ripped movies on the xoom?

All I see is how people are ecstatic they can convert stolen movies... this is primarily why I didn't shed any tears for the people over on the motorola forums crying about having to convert their downloaded (pirated) media.

Lol

lol... cool.

I'm not going to throw too many stones because my wife downloads more than any of you I'm sure but you'll never catch my crying that the Xoom won't play them all right out of the box :)

I purchased the full version of DVD Catalyst, but I must be doing something wrong.

It sees my dvd when I put it in the laptop, it scans it just fine, but when I select GO it pops the dvd out after a couple of minutes and the status shows as FAILED.

Is it because of DRM protection? If so, how do I work around that?

Thanks in advance.

I all for protecting intellectual rights and all that.. but I can only go so far with that:

Large Multibillion Dollar corps spending $$$$$ to lobby and get laws passed that are raping the ' little ' guy's rights to fair practice...

I bought a license to view a movie and have the media in my hands...
How can you say I'm stealing the movie just because I want to view it?????
Yes it ' may ' violate a law created by $$$$$ companies.. but let's be realistic about this..

Those Basxxxxx are just money grubbing thieves who simply have the $$$ to buy their way out / in to what ever they want and the customer be damxxx ....

It would be like the oil company saying you could only use the gas for the car you bought it for... and it's illegal to use that gas in you lawn mower... get real.....

Hi Jon,

Check the "Problem DVD" section on my website to see if your DVD is listed. In general, Disney movies are a bit more tricky than others.

Wasnt in reference to you. If you own the dvd and want to convert it to play on the xoom, that is totally different. He was talking about people who download the movies on the net and convert to watch on their xoom.

Yeah, and I'm just making a tongue in cheek remark about it. I admitted my own wife and by proxy myself am guilty of downloading shows and stuff off the net. We don't download movies though, I guess we just buy the ones that really stick in our minds as good :)

The standard Xoom profile creates the smallers file-sizes:

using standard Xoom profile (1500Kbps H264) DVD quality

Lilo and Stitch, 1h25m - 1040MB
Toy Story 3, 1h42m - 1250MB
Sum of all Fears, 2h03m - 1508MB

If you convert HD movies and use the HQ1 profile (for 720p video)

Lilo and Stitch, 1h25m - 1540MB
Toy Story 3, 1h42m - 1850MB
Sum of all Fears, 2h03m - 2250MB

The profiles are just a collection of settings that are automatically set. You can freely adjust these settings to reduce the file-size, but of course lower quality settings results in lower quality files as well.

The default settings will result in a near-exact duplicate of the quality of your original video (very minimal quality-loss)

If you are converting lower-quality avi files, just reduce the video quality setting in "Modify" lower.

If you use a video bitrate slightly larger than the width of the movie you still end up with a reasonable quality video.

It would be great if we could get decent audio from the xoom via the HDMI port. Are you guys hooking up your HDMI and a 2ch mini head phone plug or something? Thats the only way you can get any sort of decent sound from it....and then its still only 2.0 audio. If they would fix the damn HDMI audio issue then playing movies back on the big screen would be awesome.

And I agree, DVD CAT + Mobo is the tits. Looks awesome on the xoom and on the big screen

.....now fix the HDMI issue Motorola...or Google...or whoever!!!!!!

Sorry for the late reply.

No 5.1 from the Xoom through HDMI, maybe with the Xoom2, they will add it in there, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

As for a big screen, I played with a so-called pico projector the last week or so, and it made my viewing experience quite a bit more enjoyable. No more 10" but the full wall :)
