Ok so forgive me for those who know this already - I'm only posting this because despite this being an advanced developers forum, I'm NOT particularly advanced and I still come here so I'm assuming there are others like me and thought something basic like this might be interesting to know. No hate please if I'm stating the obvious!
Using my Galaxy s3 I hated the borders on photos (as opposed to the beautiful full screen snaps I'd get with my old htc one x). I used to think this was some special sensor on the one x and for an embarassing period of time I didn't realize that you can get exactly the same on the Galaxy, just by going to settings and changing the camera resolution to the '9mp' option. This will give you fullscreen, eye-pleasing 16:9 photos.
(yes, i know some camera enthusiasts hate the ratio but personally most of my photos stay on my phone so I'm not worried.)
For a long time I was worried about using it because I saw '9mp' and naturally immediately assumed this meant lower image quality. In actual fact, this option does not lower quality by one iota, all it does is crop and use a narrower field of view - which if you don't mind - leads to beautiful full screen shots at the maximum quality the gs3/gs4 allows.
