1st Gen Kindle Fire ROOT etc

Hi folk's,

I've literally been searching all day for solutions to the numerous problems I've ran into with this device!

All im trying to achieve is to install a custom ROM, the device is a kindle fire 1st gen that has the current version as 10.5.1_user_5174820 (which i found odd as amazon dont list a lot lower number for the latest).
I've tried to install the ADB drivers and run the KFU but the drivers wont install, Windows 10 is kicking off at every opportunity! It wont let me manually install the drivers even when i uninstall the ones it uses as default. I've disabled automatic driver install but it still does every time i plug the kindle in!!! Please can someone help me out this is driving me insane.

I've just realised i hadnt enabled USB debugging, i have now and the KFU now can see the kindle as online but cannot read the Boot Status and will not boot in to fastboot mode.

this was answered in the other thread
but for others
KFU only is compatible with system version 6.3.2 or older (rooting and Flashing TWRP and FFF)
google apps option is broken (server is gone)

1st generation fire system version is only 6.3.4 or less
