Lost root with 2.0.5 update - however Gapps and other apps continue to work

I used the root method documented by LeninLar and someone0 (many thanks to them!) on 2.0.4 and got a happy setup with Gapps and google Play etc.
Despite applying the manual OTA trick my Nook HD+ updated itself to 2.0.5.

However for some reason it retained all the date and Gapps, which is great.
I did loose root though, however at least I can continue to use the Nook and the enhanced Android experience. Apps still install via Google Play.
So, lost some control, but the most important aspect is still workable.

If you want to, you can factory reset 2.0.5 and apply a new root mod via cwm that me and leapinlar came up with. The new root mod will works on 2.0.5 also.

Pure silliness on b&n'a part imo. I like rooting but i still use their reader and atore because its easy to use. If they force ota, then i have to go skip oobe and maybe just use kindle. I know they subsidize the price of the nook but I would use their store anyways because of good software. My nook hd still works ok even if root stuff does not (titanium backup and gui elements).

I was able to downgrade to my device's factory setting back to v2.02 and successfully root my device. Powering off during OOBE when it tried to upgrade my software worked for me too. I re- started and the OOBE completed without the upgrade. I then used the allinone.sh and got the Google Play store.

Thanks to all the devs for putting this together, sharing it and supporting us.

I plan to stick with the Nook HD rather than the Nexus 7. I have theoriginal nook functions as a reade and everything else with this hack.

BTW, my nook did auto upgrade to 2.05, but everything isintact, except root. The plsy store remains and I am able to continue to get apps there.

Happy, happy.

My thoughts exactly. My nook tablet would have been great if we could have put the market on it. The more B&N screwed with us, the less B&N was part of the nook. I like the way I have my set up now with my HD+, rooted with gapps and several programs that did no work on a stock HD. I still use the Nook part of the tablet, but I am confident that B&N will drive me away from their stuff completely.

Do I need to reset, can I just root a previously rooted hd+?

While his modification is practically based on mine, most of them are. I can't say that it won't make any mess. Maybe your best bet is to backup first, then use his root mod, then if things get weird then reset and then start from scratch.
There are things that is changes for the better, he is also making some changes also. All so that mods are easier and cleaner. That's all can say. You just have to wait for him.

For people who had apps which didn't work with 2.0.4 + root, might try those apps again after the 2.0.5 update + losing root. I had some apps which now do work (kept them on the device while they didn't work). Getting them by using Titanium backup on another device and install them manually might be a good trick. At this point this might be more useful to some users then the root access. ADB also is still working, so as long as you don't need root access you might keep it this way for a while. I found another app at Play Store which says "Incompatible device" so I'll try again if it still works using a SII with Titanium backup.

it breaks the root but the play store still works and i can always run cm10 from an sd card if i REALLY want root. so far the bug fixes (and ultraviolet support) from 2.0.5 make up for the lack of root and i'm sure someone will break through this wall and we'll have root on 2.0.5 soon. love the work from this site. thanks to everyone who has contributed to making the nook hd/hd+ a more functional tablet.

My hd+ updated despite blocking the update using sqlite. Now I can't use sqlite. It appears maybe superuser has been deleted. I get error messages abt wht I cannot due becuz the device needs to be rooted. All my apps work. I am able to download and install apps. So I installed firefox which has allowed me to access the Internet again. The browser icon or even being able to access the Internet appears to have been removed.

Yes, the 2.0.5 update breaks root. But you can go to my HD CWM thread linked in my signature and re-root.

Were you not registered? Couldn't you use the stock browser? I was thinking of going ahead and registering and going to 2005, but I was under the impression you'd have the stock B&N apps, plus still be able to use Google store,

Yes, I was registered. No, I couldn't use the stock browser because with the update the icon for it had disappeared. Also, the email app that comes with the HD+ stopped working. When trying to use it, I would get the error message that it was not installed, although the icon was there.

Scroll down to Apps and make sure Browser is checked. Click save. Alternatively you can download another browser from the Play store."
This suggestion worked. All of the BN apps were there, but were unchecked. Once I checked them, they all showed back up and/or began functioning as before. My only problem now is that I am no longer rooted. However, LeapinLar has solved that. I need to pickup an additional microSD card to get started on his suggestion. LeapinLar's reply to my root issue is in this thread.

Superuser, Root Explorer, ES Explorer and SQLite Editor do not work because of the update to 2.05. I even get an error message stating they won't work unless the device is rooted. So, getting re-rooted will be my project this weekend!

In case anyone is interested, when trying to use the following apps I get these results:

Superuser: Shows allowed apps, won't do anything else

Root Explorer: Open folder and I get this message, "Your phone doesn't appear to be rooted. This is required in order to gain acess to protected files and folders such as this. The easiest way to find out how to root your phone is to Google "root your_phone_name" and look through the results for an apppropriate tutorial.

ES Explorer: I changed my settings in this app trying to figure out what happened to my apps. In the Root settings area, I unchecked Root Explorer and now can't re-check it because my HD+ is not rooted.

When trying to re-check the box, I get the message: When 'SU Request' dialog popup, please select 'always allow' or make system 'remember' your 'allow' choice. do you want to try this feature anyway? Then it gives you a choice of No or Yes. Doesn't matter which one you choose you won't be able to check the box unless the device is rooted.

SQLite Editor: No DBs are shown inside the folders listed

Don't know of any other problems. However, all of my apps work including Netflix, browsers, Amazon and Google Playstore, I am able to download and install apps despite the 2.05 update and without being rooted (I was rooted up to 2.04, but 2.05 knocked out the previous root). I just don't have full access to the apps that require a rooted device. Long answer, but gives you an idea what's going on with my HD+ since the 2.05 update.

I got caught by 2.0.5 late this morning before seeing this thread. :( I had used leapinlar's and someone0's tips to originally root the HD+ (including setting automatic updates to manual - wonder how B&N got past that?). Now that I'm updated to 2.0.5 I have the same problems listed here - except the Root Explorer message. For some reason 'm not getting that one. Oh well. Time to re-root.

Just to update everyone, I was able to re-root as LeapInLar suggested. I did not reset my HD+ back to factory settings and start from scratch. I treated the files as if they were an update to the Windows OS.

I just installed everything as is. I also installed Google PlayStore over the one I already had on my device and no problems. Everything worked as it did before the 2.05 update.

I will say the additions LeapInLar included are very nice. You guys that are waiting to root need to get on it. It's a no brainer thanks to LeapInLar and the rest of the guys. Just brilliant stuff! :)

Also, and not taking away anything from LeapInLar, but if you feel as though LeapInLar's directions are not as they say, where they '"take you by the hand" so to speak. . .if you missed these, checkout HiddenG's instructions here, they are really good:
