You can't update firmware straightway weather rooted with encrypted data or decrypted data
But in both the case if you perform same setup before rebooting device to system then still possible to update firmware without losing data. (Though strongly recommend to make backup)
Also if you change setup between encrypted to decrypted or vise a versa, you still needs format data.

Depend on your existing setup. You needs to make same setup before booting device, which route you are using is depend on the your existing setup.

You don't needs ROM for this, simply check TWRP thread, there is a script to make your existing ROM system-rw

how is this a response to my question? nonetheless i saw that the latest version does use oneui 5. just not sure if its latest beta or not.
i ask because the E variant i have doesn't have oneui 5 available as of yet and i want to use it on my s22u/E.

I misunderstood your question. If your device S908E is part of OXM group of CSC you can still use OneUI 5.0. If still it is not clear, elaborate it more.

in the past with other Samsung devices I just switch roms very much easier with TWRP installed

I am not going to make new ROM based on 4.1 because I have already enrolled for OneUI 5.0 beta and moving to VI7 I won't be able to get beta. Also mostly we may get final OneUi 5.0 by this month so no meaning of making devlopment on 4.1

I misunderstood your question. If your device S908E is part of OXM group of CSC you can still use OneUI 5.0. If still it is not clear, elaborate it more.

You have to wait for Official OneUi 5.0. To get Beta installed you needs to have Aug firmware (VG6), you already have updated to VHD sept patch. This will likely not allow to downgrade and so you can't install beta.

not sure why samsung is delaying the E model of oneui 5.

You can downgrade from avhd to avg6 I did this last week. I used patched Odin from xda. You can do it without data loss if you downgrade to avg6, boot to recovery and ignore the "data is corrupt" warnings and side load the betas 1 by 1 with a reboot to recovery between each update. Once you are on the latest beta with same or higher security your data stays intact.
