.21 - Game Fixes (Not so much)

Okay, so, there were a number of games that prior to .21 either wouldn't start (e.g., Dead Space, Swords and Soldiers, Avadon) or wouldn't run without crashing (Defense Zone HD, Jelly Defense, Myth Defenders). I'm very happy to report that after .21, each and every game now seems to run perfectly.

That alone makes .21 a great update. Anybody else experiencing better game stability (or maybe apps in general)?

Update: Changed the thread name because there are some real problems with games and .21 did NOT fix them.

ill make sure to check. hope this is true for the most part. I hated that freezing up and screen jumping after a while when playing specific games. maybe now ill reinstall that six guns game again ;)

Defense Zone HD & Dead Space were running fine defore update for me.
Haven't tried the others you mentioned

Hmmm... Dead Space crashed for me every time I tried to load it, and Defense Zone HD wouldn't finish a level without dropping to the home screen.

Maybe there was some corrupted data in my system that the update flushed out...

Try clearing the app data and cache, note this will erase any saved games or other settings but should get the app working.

my shadowgun THD still freezes up after playing for a while. I hate it and its annoying. we need to figure out what's causing this issue. only seems to go away for a while after a fresh reboot.

Does anyone know what Glowball is suppose to be?
It's pre-installed and I figured it's a game, but it just closes itself after a few minutes, just tried again after the .21 update and same thing.

Well deadspace ran fine for me before this update. Now it crashes and closes itself. Hope they fix it.

I have been getting segfaults related to OpenGL since the update notably with Dream Zoo. Was fine before on .15.

Does anyone know what Glowball is suppose to be?
It's pre-installed and I figured it's a game, but it just closes itself after a few minutes, just tried again after the .21 update and same thing.


Glowball is the original game that nvidia used to demo tegra3. It's actually pretty sweet. I haven't tried it since the update but I know that it was running just fine for me prior.

Same with me. All those games worked perfect, and continuely to do so. One game I noticed that doesn't work anymore is Freeplay. Loads up to the EA logo, then just crashes. Cleared data and cache, and its still a no go

Has anyone managed to get stratagus to work??

I think l got it to work with .13 and not since.

Stratagus is a Warcraft and starcraft emulator.

    Hello Everybody,

    I'm the author of DosBox Turbo emulator. While I don't personally own a Transformer Prime, many of my users do. I've been following this thread with interest and working to try and debug this very issue with the Prime so that my users can have an enjoyable & stable experience.

    After weeks of debugging and trying different things, I think I know why some games show instability issues and others don't. What I'm not certain of, at this point, is whether this just affects the .21 ICS ROM release or whether it affects all ROMS. As I don't have an Prime, it makes the testing go a bit slower, and I have to rely on some very helpful users of mine. :D (thanks guys!)

    So, on to what I've determined so far:

    I'm fairly certain (EDIT: now confirmed via multiple users) that the cause of the instability is due to the use of certain ARMv7 instructions. It may be a cache-coherency issue or something of that sort; however, what I've observed thus far is when an application is compiled using arm7-abi and when the user's CPU and memory accesses are pegged, under certain circumstances, a fault is triggered and Android OS will often end up killing the application. The common theme seems to be the ARM7 instructions + high CPU/Memory load = unexpected behaviors. Even just using the ARM7 instructions with no optimizations seems to cause problems under high load, though it does seem to take longer.

    Compilation using the older ARM5 instruction set seems to result in a high degree of stability, regardless of the optimization settings.

    So to sum things up, it appears the combination of these three factors in unison are causing some type of instability:

    1. Apps utilizing the Android NDK (r7c & r8)
    2. Apps compiled with the armabi-v7 (regardless of optimization state) [I'm using a mixture of thumb-2 & full arm instructions in different libraries]
    3. High cpu/memory load

    When all the above combinations are all satisfied, some fault is often triggered, causing the OS to kill the app or behave strangely. Sometimes it takes a few minutes, and at other times, it seems to take tens of minutes. Usually dependent upon the CPU/Memory load. Again, at first sight, it appears to be some type of cache-coherency issue is being triggered by a certain combination of arm7 instructions + high cpu load. I am also not sure if the 'lag' issues people are also talking about in this thread are related to the freeze/reboot/restart issue. I believe they might be two separate issues, as my users have not noticed any lag.

    I hope this gives some direction to those who are working on solving this issue. One option seems to be dropping the usage of the ARMv7 instructions in favor of the ARMv5; however, you will lose hardware floating point capabilities as well as maybe 10-25% in speed.

    I'm not done with my research; I still need to determine whether the problem is only with the thumb-2 instructions or if even a full arm compile will cause the instability as well, or whether its a mixture of the two that is causing it. Hopefully, this is a problem that can be rectified in a software/ROM update rather than a hardware problem. More than likely, we will be looking to ASUS to fix this problem, as the solution I proposed will kill performance, and would require the app developer to be aware of this one specific problem in the first place.

    Hadn't checked back in this thread for a few days, but now I'm having game crashes again. The games I mentioned that wouldn't start still do on .21, but the games I mentioned no longer crashing actually do now. In fact, pretty much all of my tower defense games crash regularly.

    It's actually getting a bit frustrating...

    I started to make a list of games that crash, either at startup or sometime during gameplay, but it became easier to just list the games that DON'T crash. So far, that's the various Angry Birds games and lightweight games like Crossword and such.

    Any game that utilizes any significant graphics at all, and that plays for more than a few minutes at a time (i.e., before switching levels) seems to crash. There's something major going on here, and I can say it didn't start with .21. In fact, I was hoping that .21 would fix some of the crashes that started some time ago (I'd guess, sometime after .15). I wish I'd paid better attention to when it actually started.
