Finally got this to work

Hey this process works great.

I was running into the same issue regarding the update (process a) not working. status 7 error.

turns out knox was preventing the files in Miata_KK_Fix_1.0.zip to run during reboot.

you would get a message stating that an application was attempting to alter system files.

disable that notification and knox and reboot.

then continue with your process and that would STOP getting status 7 error.

I'm on stock MJ5 non rooted and cannot get the ota from Att. All it says is update interrupted. Any ideas?
Are you connected to a stable Wi-Fi network? Try downloading the update zip file in the OP, rename it to update.zip, place it on your external SD card, and flash it in stock recovery. The file in the OP is the exact same thing as the official OTA KitKat your phone won't download and it will most likely be much faster to do it that way (if you download the file with your PC) than waiting one or more hours for your phone to download the file.

I'm pretty sure the phone does a factory reset after flashing things in the stock recovery, so make sure you move your pictures, music, and other stuff you want to keep to your PC first and copy it back later. I forget if the stock recovery wipes the internal storage and formats the external SD card when it does a factory reset (I haven't used it in a while), but it's better to be safe than sorry.

I recommend rooting and flashing a KitKat ROM instead of using the OTA. There are a few good ones in the development section. If you can't root because it's a business phone or you don't want to lose your warranty or something, then do what I said above.

stuck on the Odin step... I did everything exactly as described but instead of flashing these files Odin just says "Setup Connection..."

EDIT: Never mind. This guy says to go into download mode after Odin, but apparently to use Odin phone must be in download mode. Which is not mentioned.

Being in download mode to use Odin was actually mentioned like four years ago.

Possibly, but there are some people reading this guide who are using Odin for the first time ever. I didn't root, the phone is stock, and I only came here because the official update doesn't work.

I followed the guide exactly, but I kept getting errors. I checked my phone and realized I'm already on MJ5 and NB4. So I skipped everything and proceeded to the last step. Getting Error 7.

Someone mentioned disabling know, but I don't see any way to disable it.

So i am on the step to use Heimdall frontend. Firstly, i did not see mention to change the partition name to system. anyhow, after closing heimdall and restarting it, once i get everything loaded and click start it just says "releasing device interface" in the window and the bar at the bottom never moves from 0%, there are words to the left of the bar, but they are cut off and are illegible.

now that i have restarted this process, i cannot get odin to recognize my device. i have unplugged usb and reboot back to download mode, restarted computer, nothing worls.
