3.5mm jack is very bad quality! (or just software?)

Just like to add that I can't get my headphones very loud and they're only 52 ohms. edit: Ok the volume is really low which isn't a problem with my redmi note4 (LOS), I'll try editing .prop file in a few weeks and see if I can raise a lil bit.

They sound fine, the jack should be 24-bit/192kHz which is fine for almost everybody

Day Before i also checked that the plug was properly inserted and it was,.. doesn't matter, its working ok now.

Got my X3 and tested this myself. The sound by default is definitely not right but I suspect it's due to processing. From my testing, it's applying some form of Compression and treble boosting.

There's some settings in "Settings -> Sound & vibration -> Sound Effects". There doesn't seem to a way to disable the processing entirely. The default is preset is "Smart".

I've set it to "Music" which seems to have the least processing but still has some weird treble boosting. Movie has lots of compression and Voice also has some crazy mid-high boosting going on and cut low/sub-bass. I'm guessing the default "Smart" mode.

I'm testing on ATH-M50x headphones (relatively low impedance) so can't comment on high impedance headphones. Other devices are my desktop UMC204HD DAC, old LG V20 phone (very good onboard DAC).

EDIT: Just adding, using Foobar2000 + OpenSL mode (which bypasses any ROM sound processing) makes the sound VERY muddy. A lot of the high end is lost. Doing the same on my V20 does not have the same effect. I'll have to see if a USB DAC has the same issues (don't have one) as that would immediately tell me if it's the software end or hardware.

Mine is disabled (greyed out) and I can't seem to enable it. Is there any app or other setting I need to enable before?

I suspect debloating the phone removed one app that affects this, just need to find which one

USB audio does work so long as it's a full USB DAC. Can confirm my Steelseries Arctis 1 dongle works. Some of the cheaper dongles just re-route analog audio output which presumably doesn't exist on the Poco X3 Type-C port.

I haven't fully debloated my phone, I only removed some of the more "obvious" bloatware.

Otherwise I've got some further findings as I remembered my Steelseries Wireless headphones actually use a Type-C adapter, which allows me to test some theories. For reference I'm testing with the track "Below" by Leprous. Great prog rock/metal band if you're into that. There's lots of stereo separation, some sub-bass and the cymbals in the main chorus are very forward in the mix. The audio through the headphone jack is boosted exactly where those cymbals sit, making it sound quite bad, which led me to post here.

1) OpenSL mode is still muddy on the Type-C DAC. I suspect this issue is software then, as the DAC should bypass all audio hardware.
2) Audio in the Type-C DAC is STILL affected by the "Sound Effects" Preset. However it only seems to be a compression effect here, not EQ. The Music preset seems pretty flat and normal to my ears.
3) Type-C + "Music" preset seems to be the the best I can get it right now.

I'll be interested to see if future custom roms (particularly ones based on AOSP) fix the issue with the headphone jack. Even the cheapest of the cheap headphone amplifiers and DACs are not "that" bad these days so I'd be highly surprised if the hardware is actually at fault for the headphone jack sounding bad.

I'm not exactly an audiophile, but I haven't experienced any problems with the 3.5mm jack worth noting. Seems totally fine to me. I compared it to my old Samsung I had lying around, as well as an Alienware laptop, and it sounded about the same. Regardless, I've installed Viper4Android and it's improved my listening experience exponentially, as it does with every device I install it on lol.

Whether or not you have any complaints about the 3.5mm jack, I highly recommend installing Viper, given that you've rooted your phone (which tbf, does come with its own share of drawbacks like Google Pay / SafetyNet). Either way, I consider it to be the holy grail of audio processing for Android. I do wish there was an option to disable all MIUI audio processing in the "Sound & vibration >> Sound Effects" menu as it does seem to affect Viper's processing too, but I've decided to keep it on 'Music' as a few people here are saying that seems to be the most flat.

The phone activate automatically the mute button !
The phone activate the stereo speakers instead of passing the sound through the headphones !
