Well, slightly off-topic, but European Defys seem to have other RF parts for 3G, but it's not impossible to get 3G working with AT&T in the States...

I had during my trip to the East Coast quite often 3G, but never full signal (max 4 out of 5 bars) with the T-Mobile 3.4.2 baseband on my German Retail Defy+. Screenshot was made in a motel in Montauk, the signal was very weak at all (even with EDGE) over there.

Well there have been many people who have flashed Defy+ ROMs on their Defy and vice versa. They haven't reported any problems. If radio hardware was different my guess is that even baseband switcher wouldn't have worked, right? But I always just assumed that all handsets of Defy, regardless of where they are sold, have the ability to use any of the types of networks ("Quad band" right?). Anyway this is all just speculation...as long as my defy works on my network, I'm happy :)

EDIT: Even within just Defy or just Defy+, if radios were incapable of tuning into the HSDPA frequencies other than of that region, then there would have been many complaints from people who have flashed different region's SBF's..so my (inexperienced) guess is that Defy can connect to all HSDPA bands. Just this afternoon I read an article somewhere about some US carrier releasing an update to a couple of their android handsets to make them quadband...until now they were marketed as dual band and non global. Maybe same for Defy?
If I read the specs of the Defy, right from Motorola's site, I understand:

NETWORKS:
WCDMA 900/2100 <--> At least dualband for WCDMA
GSM 850/900/1800/1900 <--> Quadband for GSM
HSDPA 7.2 Mbps (Category 7/8), EDGE Class 12, GPRS Class 12, HSUPA 2.0 Mbps

So, I understand that this particular Defy model is only Quadband for GSM, while it is only Dualband for WCDMA. Although I remember there is a Defy in some country with 3 bands for WCDMA. I can't remember which one though.

Just found that in Spain it is stated as triband for WCDMA:

WCDMA 850/1700/2100
GSM 850/900/1800/1900

Hmm... Well any specs from moto, I'd take with a grain if salt ;)
Anyway guess we'll know for sure if someone actually travels somewhere else and tries it out...

Are these fixes different from the baseband switcher?

hi...i would like to know if these fixes are any different from the baseband changer app that is being used in the CM9 nightlies...if yes then would these be able to give better connectivity in India for 2G/3G?

I guess those I posted here should be included in the app. Thus thread was previous to the app, now it's probably easier to use the app.

I managed to pull out radio from my nandroid backup of stock rom and prepare fix for 900-1800 Mhz GSM networks.....this is for South East Asia (SEA Roms)......esp. in India...

Hope it works for you as well...

cheerss!!!!
Does this mean that only 900 & 1800 are included in this file?

Also is there any of the files which have only 900+1800(gsm) & 2100 UMTS?

In India we use GSM 900, GSM 1800 & UMTS2100 - http://www.gsmarena.com/network-bands.php3?sCountry=INDIA
is there any baseband which have only these 3 bands to avoid any battery drain?
Again, the ONLY baseband you should be installing is the one that already matches your hardware. It doesn't matter what your carrier uses. Installing a baseband that doesn't match your hardware will result in degraded perfomance on all bands.

I found out that below are the five files only which are required for base-band:
Path /system/etc/motorola/bp_nvm_default
File_Audio
File_Audio2
File_GSM
File_Seem_Flex_Tables
generic_pds_init

If I put these files only and delete rest, battery consumption is reduced considerably?

I have a Chinese retail Defy and am on the T-Mobile network now. I was hoping that flashing the T-Mobile baseband would give me 3G speed, but it didn't even get any connection after I do that (on the lock screen it says "Emergency Calls Only") :(. Seems like different Defy's do have different baseband hardware after all.
