reading this adds some doubt that we receive it. Not sure they want to completely throw our UI out and replace with the phablet one. Would current owners like? not like?

I fail to see how this article reveals anything about the Xoom receiving 4.2. If anything it supports it - the only 10 inch tablet with 4.2 hasn't been touched by the public yet, and when it is it will still be then only one. There is little doubt that Samsung, Asus and others will start working on updates for their large tablets to 4.2 and getting them out over the next several months. It would be in Googarola's best interest to push it to the Xoom so there are 2 representative examples of the new large screen UI on the street for others to follow. I was surprised to see the Xoom at Office Max last week on "clearance" at $445. There is certainly not a fire sale happening with the Xoom tablets, so there is still relevance to the device.

What this article did do was explain very clearly Google's logic behind the UI change. It makes sense, and when I saw the first posted screenshots in another thread, I immediately liked it for all of Google's reasons (though I couldn't explain it in their terms at the time).

I think it will be the last Xoom update. Google normally keeps a 2 year device life span, and this year, our beloved tablet completed 2 y.o. so I think, it'll receive this update and if we have luck, we'll receive the next. Of this one won't be the last, the next is almost sure :p, sorry but it's the truth.

Our beloved Xoom actually completes 2 years in February 2013. But I agree that this is probably it. Next iteration of Android will likely be a larger jump and either require better hardware or simply exclude the Xoom. Naturally the good folks over at CM and Team EOS will cook up something for us, even though it is technically illegal now to enable root access on a tablet.

This might be one of the liveliest discussions ever on the XDA Xoom forums!

lets keep it going...

JBQ is sick and I would doubt any AOSP news comes out until the release week of the Nexus 4/10 (which is Tuesday Nov 13)

we'll have to speculate for another 1-4 weeks before anything IMHO.

I can't decide if I should hold onto my beloved xoom, or sell it while I can still get something out of it. I'm definitely intrigued by the nexus 10. I just wonder if jelly Bean will be the last version of android this device sees. It is starting to show its age a bit, although Team EOS 4.1.2 runs like a boss on mine. I do also like the fact that I have 4g as well. I'd like to see a nexus 10 and xoom size by side to better compare them.

Really?? That can't be true. How can modifying something you have bought and own be illegal?

I guess this US only?
Has to do with DRM, and the apparent inability to clearly define a tablet. Search the web a bit - there's a lot posted about the topic.

Yup, definitely seems to be US only. You lot have a really screwed up legal system!
It thought that was obvious from the Apple - Samsung trial in San Francisco. Horribly screwed up when a company can patent a pre- existing shape by rounding the corners.

I personally think that the whole concept of software patents is stupid. I believe patents have their place for tangible products. The idea behind a patent was to give someone time between prototyping the idea and going to market so that they can do all the necessary R&D that needs to go into it, plus manufacturing, etc.

None of these hurdles exist in software patents. With software, you're doing your R&D while you're coming up with your idea, thus rendering the idea of a patent useless. Just my $0.02.

In a very similar case in a British court, Apple was told to STFU, and make a public apology on their website for bringing it to court!

Trouble is, their apology is very sarcastic indeed, and does not contain the word sorry. They also refer to a load of other cases around they world which are not relevent. I have a feeling that when the judges see that, Apple will be found in contempt of court and be in BIG trouble!

Then I will laugh.

I remember with ICS it was released to AOSP the day before the release of the Gnex so I'm hoping we have something similar and we're closer than we think.

This is the first I heard of this, IIRC (I'm probably wrong, please correct me) but didn't the law or something saying it was legal to root devices run out, so it's now neither legal or illegal (no mans land). I swear hearing this somewhere sometime.

According to the new law, you can root/jailbreak phones, just not tablets. Doesn't make any sense from a functional perspective, but from a legal perspective no one could agree how to define a tablet.

In4.2 there is updated Google Apps. There is a Zip file of 4.2 Gapps around. If rooted flash in recovery. Works great. Clean up the System area by getting rid of some ringtones and videos and the Xoom works great.
