I personally think that the whole concept of software patents is stupid. I believe patents have their place for tangible products. The idea behind a patent was to give someone time between prototyping the idea and going to market so that they can do all the necessary R&D that needs to go into it, plus manufacturing, etc.

None of these hurdles exist in software patents. With software, you're doing your R&D while you're coming up with your idea, thus rendering the idea of a patent useless. Just my $0.02.
Just a friendly clarification - that's incorrect. The purpose of a patent is to protect the intellectual property of an inventor once a product is in the market. i.e. if someone wants to use patented tech, they typically have to pay license fees or royalties to the original inventor. A patent normally lasts 20 years.

Actually a patent is meant to protect a physical way of doing something and a copyright is meant to protect written works.
So what the poster said was essentially true, they are trying to patent the way you move your hands not thier product that is really just a written work that makes that hand movement do something.

The slide to unlock patent is an attempt to patent your hand movement (slide Left to Right) and is not REALLY a product they have created.
The product is nothing more than a program or code and should not be patented merely copyrighted,

Face unlock
JB stock wallpapers
New X (Nexus) boot animation
Sound Search widget (Google ears)
Single finger expandable notifications with 4.1.2

These are the top omissions that come to mind on the Xoom, there may be others.

If I remember correctly the issue with Facelock on the Xoom was about the piggish memory and storage requirements of the faceprints which is why even the custom Rom devs removed it.
Truth is it was not all that good of a feature to begin with and was easily bypassed.
As for the Wallpapers and Boot anim, are those really features?

Not so much features as an AOSP fingerprint to let the Xoom owners know we received the same update as other AOSP devices.

A patent can also cover a process, originally thought of for manufacturing or refining proceses. But arguments have been put forward that it includes computing processes and user interface processes. So you get into murky waters where code could be covered by patent, copyright, or trade secret, each with different implications.

I am most definitely not shocked by this. That said, we can still expect a 4.1.2/JZO54K update for the VZW Xoom at some point down the line. Overall, the Xoom had a great run and got more updates in its lifetime than most tablets would get in five lifetimes. Owning one was an absolute pleasure. This will go down as one of the legendary Android tablets.

Sad. But all good things must come to a close. While the N10 is really enticing, I'm hoping the folks over at CyanogenMod pull the 4.2 source into the wingray builds. I'll make the ROM switch and maximize the Xoom until the next major Android release.

Although I believe the xoom will continue to get roms for 4.2 and beyond, the quickest tablet to get the update will be the n10. I like to be on the cutting edge of tech so I prefer to be the first to get an update. So long xoom, it was a good run. First 3.0 tablet, received all the updates before any other tablet except I believe the tf 300 got 4.0 before us, not sure on that one lol. Love my xoom and will be keeping it as a backup tablet, maybe stick it to the fridge or something. Cheers.

The Xoom still rocks. Sorry Google dropped it. I was able to flash in recovery 4.2 apps including photosphere. The hardware on the Xoom seems capable of running 4.2. Seems a shame to stop the upgrades for a minor upgrade and not a version release. Oh well.
