"4G" Network Speeds in NYC / Unlimited Smartphone Data Plan = 4G??

Hi everyone,

I have AT&T's Unlimited Smartphone Data Plan ($30.00/mo) as many of you do. However, my concern is that I am not "enabled" for 4G speeds because I am on that plan and not on of their tiered 4G data plans. Since I know so many of you are on the unlimited data plan I am thinking that maybe there is one that enables 4G and another that doesn't.

The reason why I say this is that I live in downtown Manhattan and I have never gotten download speeds much higher than 2Mbps. The upload speeds, I know, are limited. However, I have seen people saying they are getting download speeds of 5-7Mbps! I get nothing even approaching those speeds.

Thanks in advance.

There is a "4g" enabled unlimited plan. You should be on it if you upgraded through an At&t sales location. On the other hand, if you just swapped your SIM (or an uninformed sales rep did) then you may not be.

There are definitely different SOC codes. The easiest way to find out is to call and ask. :)

Thanks for letting me know about the different types. I was afraid to call and have them force me into a 2GB plan after finding out that I have an Atrix. I did buy the phone from an AT&T store, but I don't think he changed my plan.

I've been feeling pretty down with my "4G" phone giving me speeds like 1.5Mbps down and .2 up in Manhattan. Simply ridiculous.

I haven't seen anyone saying they're getting speeds that fast. Highest I've seen is 5mbps from a Bell user.
