If the ZIP didn't work I'd need to know what the actual problem was. Was there an error message? If so what was it? What actually happened?
You're welcome to try the ZIP that comes with Tickle My Android. That's a known good that works on Oreo and Pie.
I've also used it in my deodexing tool and that works on Oreo and Pie as well.

As for the issues with modding SystemUI.apk, this could be done to so many things. It all depends on your precise process.
Try decompiling and recompiling the file without any changes, making sure to keep the same signature, then see if that flashes correctly.
If it does then you need to look at the mods you were doing.
If it doesn't then we have to look at the process you used.

Here is another OVERLAY mod that can reduce tha stock size of navigation bar height/width.... How does it work? It ll make an overlay for tha height & width size of your navigation bar in framework-res.apk

I have uploaded 5 zip files which can be flash from recovery [TWRP]

    a. Nav bar with 30dip size
    b. Nav bar with 35dip size
    c. Nav bar with 32dip size
    d. Nav bar with 40dip size
    e. Nav bar with 48dip size(Stock size)
    f. Nav bar with 42dip size
    g. Nav bar with 44dip size
    h. Nav bar with 46dip size
    i. Nav bar with 24dip size
    j. Nav bar with 26dip size
    k. Nav bar with 28dip size

    Installation:
    Flash in recovery....reboot!!!:highfive:
It should work on Stock-Based ROM
    Tested on PureX ROM v4

Enjoy guys & dnt forget to press thanks button.........

Easy way to change navbar size without Xposed :) I really like that
