Next to nowhere
This morning, I received the android 7.1.1 on my Nexus 9 WIFI and it was installed smoothly.... no issues there! After that, I realize that the audio/sound coming out the speaker was lower volume with almost no bass!

I tried several mp3 players to make sure that it wasn't poweramp's fault.

Anyone else has this issue?

*sorry for my bad english*

i just checked my n9 lte on 7.1.1 and I'm not seeing anything different except maybe lower volume levels. i checked with google play music so it might be power amp causing your issues.

Edit: also just checked with youtube and some other songs i know that have a decent amount of bass and they're coming out fine and on par with the speakers on my htc one m9 so i definitely think it's poweramp

Another one here with low volume issues.

This is through all the apps and when I try to get to the previous volume levels all I hear is distortion.

Yeah, this was the first thing I noticed upon rebooting the Nexus 9 after the 7.1.1 update (I use the full OTA package). The over-all level seems quieter, and lacking in bass. Even the keypad clicks seem to sound weaker.

lacking some bass...indeed.
Flashed back to unencrypted 91D and the volume/bass issue is significant for me. A dealbreaker even. For a device touting front facing stereo speakers it's a facepalm moment to me.

I assume the fix involves the tablets nether regions?

Same issue here, Google ****ed up once again..

Normally when watching YouTube videos with the front facing speakers in a quiet room I had my volume at 75%, now I have to set it at 100%.

Someone already raised an issue at Google (link below), but not expecting a fix any time soon. As usual when Google ****s something up..

N4F26X April patch is out.
Maybe the audio bug is fixed or is this yet another useless update?
"Useless" because when the people is forced to downgrade to 7.0 to get back their tablet working correctly, the develop of all the security hotfixes for 7.1.1 become just a waste of time.

I've had the same problem and it was fixed after instaling FireIce Kernel

Thanks for the tip, dumdum2. For several months now, I've been tolerating the dire, thin, weedy sound quality of 7.1.1 on my Nexus 9 :( .

So yesterday, after updating to the May security patch (N4F27B) via FlashFire, and discovering the woeful audio quality issue of 7.1.1 had STILL not been addressed by Google (and I suspect it probably never will be now)...

...so today I went in search of a solution and discovered your comment about the FireIce kernel.

And it certainly seems to have done the trick :) .

Having flashed it, the audio is now significantly improved. It seems flashing this kernel restores some component or file; see screenshot below of my TWRP output and the highlighted line.

Anyhow, whatever the underlying technical details are, the audio on my 7.1.1 Nexus 9 sounds considerably better than it has for quite sometime :) .

Cheers!

Rgrds,
Ged.

October (n9f27m) update still doesn't fix it. Two more months and it's a whole year.
