Thank you for help, I finally get it works. The trick is flashing vendor image, this must be done before anything else.

Lift to wake works, but i think I know what your problem is.... Your sensors aren't working.. I bet you also don't have Auto rotate.
I had to use the steps outlined before exactly to get the sensors working... But with the latest Carbon version, with AOSP on both slots before installing the ROM, I can flash TWRP Installer and still have sensors. I basically installed it just like crDroid.... Flash Jan image, Flash vendor, flash TWRP, format and flash ROM, flash TWRP ZIP, reboot once or twice until the ROM loads up.

I didn't check that, and I'm already back to crDroid.
I followed your instruction with flashing vendor image but like I said, only "lift to wake" not working, everything else is ok.
Basically, the process to install this ROM is exactly like install Paranoid Android rom. They both need vendor image upfront before everything else.
I might come back to Carbon rom one day.

I tried again today and "lift to wake" works without Gapps.
If I flash this rom with Gapps follow then Auto rotation and lift to wake not working.
(maybe something is wrong with my device), I goes back to crDroid again.

Why is this phone such a PITA for ROMs? I've never had to jump through so many hoops with such a high retry rate. Is it because its an early treble device or did Essential just screw it up? I'm at the part where it boots but sensors aren't working even though I flashed the Jan vendor to both slots and followed all the steps except flashing the twrp installer. PA and Lineage weren't quite this difficult either. Why? What's the difference?
Anyone have the issue where when restarting to recovery after sideloading CR 80 with TWRP you get into CR Recovery and PC will not recognize it?

I'd like to test out cr9.0 (for Android 11) whenever it becomes available.

Their Android 10 rom is very stable though.
Adaptive brightness does not work for me. I tried resetting it via Settings/Apps../Device Health Services/Clear storage and no change..
Also screen stays on during phonecall. I guess the proximity/light sensor is messed up. Anyone else have this?

so CarbonRom R is now based on Android 11 .. looking at the officially-supported hardware elements I didn't see anything mentioned about Wifi Calling ..
Can anyone comment on whether it's working for them yet? I absolutely need that feature if I'm going to use this rom (it's currently working on LineageOS 18 for mata)

I installed the latest. I dont know maybe importing contacts from an Android 12 export broke it but I could not open the Contacts or Phone app. Launcher would also glitch/skip every once in awhile while going back and forth from recent apps. I will not try again.

Sure! I'll make it as simple as possible, I'd recommend reading through these before just starting with step 1, as my side notes are somewhat important.
1. Do your wiping and flash stock if you want (probably a good idea)
2. Reboot to bootloader
3. Flash twrp, then reboot into twrp from bootloader
4. Once in twrp, flash carbon (I didn't boot to rom yet, stayed in recovery)
5. Immediately after flashing carbon, pull your boot image. (You do this while in recovery. NOTE, you'll want to tap reboot from twrp before running command to see which slot you're on, but don't actually reboot, we just need to know if system is on partition a or b. Look in the root guide here on xda for the command to pull boot img)
6. After verifying you successfully pulled the boot image (it will be at the root of your storage if you used the command from the root guide), reboot straight to bootloader from twrp.
7. When in bootloader, flash twrp (no need to change slots manually as this is all done automatically with this process), reboot straight to recovery from bootloader.
8. When in trwp, flash gapps (I also used open gapps, no particular reason), and then flash the boot image you pulled in step 5. (Don't forget to flash both gapps and your boot image here!!)
9. Reboot, n' enjoy!
