Enthusiasm without knowledge is not good; impatience will get you into trouble.
This should be part of the opening post.. (maybe not quote the book and verse for those who aren't Christian. They may get offended and we don't need anymore of that... I do a pretty good job of that on my own!

Appreciate the warning

Dear People,

Stop using Rom Manager!!!!!!!. I've read several posts over the last few days about people ****ing up their phone using ROM MANAGER. This piece of software does NOT work for our phones, so do us ALL a favor and STOP using it so we can stop posting:"First, you shouldn't have used Rom Manager" in your thread aptly named "Is my SGSII Bricked?". Thanks in advance boys and gals :highfive:

WITH LOVE,

Jthatch12

My old GSII had Rom Manager installed by a previous owner, and it had everything screwed-up. Glad to see a warning. Just does not work for our phones.

Not sure how many people on here are religious, but I saw this verse today from the English Good News Translation of the bible. I had just flashed Mystic's Glory onto my phone and wanted to try out a bible app and this was the second verse I saw. I had to laugh and thought it would be fitting to those who come here in haste:

Proverbs 19 verse 2

Enthusiasm without knowledge is not good; impatience will get you into trouble.
You should make a Proverbs19:2 thread for us newbs to give each other wrong information. Lol:D

Can someone please explain why or link to a thread which explains why Rom Manager causes issues with these phones? I've been using Rom Toolbox Pro recently to flash new zips in queue and it hasn't given me any issues. I want to say Rom Toolbox Pro uses Rom Manager to flash the zips as this feature didn't work without the paid version of Rom Manager. I did use the Rom Manager to flash a new version of CWM. This new version launches when I use the install queue instead of the kernel version of CWM. But so far it's not caused a problem. I can still reboot into the kernel recovery when needed. The install queue is way more convenient than flashing each zip one by one. I'm still newer and I'd like to learn more about why we shouldn't do X, Y, and Z rather than just don't do it.

Also, is Mobile Odin Pro a viable alternative to Rom Manager? Thanks in advance for your input.

Read through the horror stories of people bricking their phones. If you need to flash things, do it the correct way and use CWM, not a shortcut.

Right, but I'm interested in the more technical aspects as to why we shouldn't use Rom Manager, Rom Toolbox Pro, or Mobile Odin Pro. I get that it can cause conflicts and bricks but do we know what it is about the software that causes these issues? What conflicts does it cause? For example why haven't I run into a problem with the software while others have? There has to be something that is triggering these problems. Is it because I'm using Rom Toolbox Pro rather than Rom Manager directly? I just want to better understand the situation here rather than just blindly following others.

And of course I'll read other posts and do more personal research but if anyone out there is kind enough, knowledge enough, and has the time, I would appreciate it if you could impart some of your wisdom that way myself, and future readers of this sticky, will read this and think "Oh, now I get why I shouldn't use this app." :)

Got a bit of a point there bud. It makes sense to provide the information as to why not to use something in the same post that it, well, says not to use it.

Okay well here we go

Unless the device your are using is officially supported by ClockworkMod's Rom Manager, ROM MANAGER WILL NOT WORK WITH YOUR PHONE

Example: Our phone (the I777) is not officially supported by ClockworkMod. Our sister phone (the I9100) IS supported officially by ClockworkMod.

If after this is all said and done you don't beleive me, go use Rom Manager and live life on the bleeding edge :)

PS: You're that guy that presses the red button when everyone tells you not to, aren't you?

No I'm not. Lol. I'm the guy who wants to know WHY I shouldn't press the red button. :p

I went to the CWM website and it lists two different recoveries for our phones. Right now I have flashed the 6.0.1.0 bec of Rom Manager. I suppose I'm lucky that it hasn't bricked me after using it yet. However, if I flash the 5.0.2.6 instead would this prevent the issues that everyone has previously reported?

Just re-flash the ROM ur on if ur worried about anything, but tbh, you should have the 6.0.1.3 ver. anyway, that's what is packaged in the CM kernel with Task's AOKP JB.

More generally speaking

Are any other mechanisms considered safe, or am I about to get slapped with a "only use CWM recovery/see above"? (No objection, cheek braced.)

Curious in particular about the OTA mechanism in AOKP and the new one in the CM10 nightlighlies. Are these safe?

Our kernels come with the recovery built in. There is no reason why u should need to use rom manager. And it has been known to cause issues with our phones. Use it if u want but if u do don't cry about it or post a thread about how it soft bricked your phone or wouldn't boot properly or wouldn't get u into recovery.

Sent from team Pirate headquarters using Beanacle ROM. As soon as he builds it.

Can someone explain to a retard, (me) what exactly is happening here? I came to the fourm because I've been trying to root my I777 and put a decent rom on it and have been having a HELL of a time -- I am currently uncertain as to whether my problems have stemmed from the aformentioned Rom Manager fiasco or not but some guidance would be appreciated... I'm even having a hard time finding a solid link to the official CWM thread with the non dev versions of it....

Hopefully the above link would give you a better understanding to root your device. read it multiple times before attempting to do it.

I don't think he's referring to rooting his device as being the tough part - that's easy. I'm in the same hole as him, figuring out kernals and ROMs and how the hell to get them on our phones. There really is no guide per say for that on this site, and most guides found using a google search yield results that suggest the use of ROM manager.
