So yeah, I was just playing a game and randomly a screw feel right out of it from above the top left trigger. I don't know how it was in there at all as it seem to have no threads for it to be tightened back in.
What should I do?

put it back in?

Have a look at the iFixit teardown and see if you can see the screw in their teardown. Or contact where you got the device from and make a warranty claim.

Contact Nvidia. They will fix you right up. Most likely send you out a replacement device, then send yours in. Their customer service on the Shield has been excellent.

Wow, the screw just fell out? That sucks.

But yeah, Nvidia customer service is excellent I'm sure they'll help you out.

Yeah just fell out, there are like no thread in the hole to put it back in, I dunno, seems weird.
Is it easy to transfer all the files from one to the other?

I had the same thing happen to my device, and when I contacted Nvidia, they wanted to RMA it. I thought that was ridiculous for one of 7 screws, so I decided to take it by Microcenter today (or yesterday I guess, it's after midnight) and asked at the Knowledge Bar if they had the right screw or knew where to find one. They told me that the screw was no issue, just that the head would be different. I told them I couldn't care less, and they found the right screw and put it in free of charge.

I would have RMA'ed it, I'd be thinking that another one was going to fall out any second. Plus they do advance RMA's, so you wouldn't have to spend one second without a shield and not only that but they overnight it to you.

PLug shield A into a computer, COPY, plug shield B into a computer, PASTE.

Theres a little more to it than that if you want to do things properly, but its not hard.
If you want to copy your apps on a non rooted device (btw, rooted devices have no warranty) install ES File explorer and you can backup apps to .apk files which can then be sideloaded onto the new device.

I was aware of the great RMA Nvidia provides, but I just couldn't get over the ridiculousness of having a replacement sent over a screw that fell out. The replacement screw has been perfect so far.

Just to be clear.
The screw fell out of the Shield. I didn't lose the screw.
When I tried to put the screw back in it had NO THREADS in the screw hole for any screw to grab on to.
If I RMA it, it's not because I can't get a screw to fit, it's because there is no threads in the hole.

I would RMA it if there is no thread in the hole. You can get self tapping screws, but most electronic gadgets are made of plastics that tend to crack when used with self tappers so you'll just make it worse. Or you could tap it yourself properly, but again, might not be perfect. RMA or return to the shop you bought it from.

I would RMA it. That way NVIDIA can look for what went wrong, and you don't get "screwed" by it later on. Also, to back up your device, use "adb backup". So far, had great luck doing that. Google is finally getting Android caught up to iOS 1.0 in that regard. :-/

Its not just you. I have tore down my shield a few days ago and 1/2 the screws have been slighty over tightend from the factory...

I really dont even know how to feel about this. Not much i can do now (as I have clearly voided my warany) but drill out and re-tap the holes to fit a sightly larger diameter screw.

As it is right now my Shield is still very solid feeling when assembled. But I know the long term effects of plastic housing with metal fasteners will eventually fail under the constant twisting forces applied to the device ( shield is by no means alone in this engineering short sight) I just hope that the "shield 2" will come out before that happens :p

Mine had a creaking sound when I would open it, I just figured it was because how tight the hinge was. Then last night I opened up the screen heard a plastic popping sound and noticed the screen was off a bit. When I closed it, the hinge on the left side as your looking at the screen seemed raised and when I turned over the Shield there was the screw by the hinge missing. After some searching I found it, tried to put it back in but it fell out. Well I called Nvidia and they are sending me another one, RMA'd this morning. They said send there other one back. What sucks is I just put a Skinomi carbon skin and screen protector last week. I'm going to try to peel them off and save them for use on the new unit or I might have to order another. My advice Live Chat them and RMA it.

Just an update, So...
I was going to rma it cause every one is like nvidia are the rma kings or w/e.
I got my Shield from ebay, in a New(other) condition, the owner got it from a game stop on a trade in, so they tried it afterward but couldn't return it, so its basically brand new. But because I'm not the true first owner, the warranty isn't transferable. I mean, considering it hasn't been on the market for even a month yet, this seems pretty petty a thing to hold against me.

Seems fair, even though it sucks. That's a pretty common practice from any company. It's to keep people from just buying a used(even broken) Shield at a dirt cheap price and get a brand new one by exchanging it.

Either way though, I'd be bummed if I were in your shoes.

UPDATE: Nvidia said they wouldnt give me a new screw, but a new shield. This is my second RMA. Nvidia Rocks! I didnt root my 1st one, but i did my second one and they dont really care about that. It seems to me they just want to put this "trial" product out there and support it to
the end of the world. then see if its worth it to go for another nvidia type system.

My interpretation of what they said is that they would launch in the US first, iron out the kinks and go global. So I expect they are using experiences of guys like you (and other forum users) to work out what is needed for a 2nd revision shield which would go global.

my solution

I would say RMA like everyone else, didn't feel like it would help me in the long run, due to the Shield not being durable at all.

I had the same problem, and have seen this 3 other times. My shield was broken brand new, I didn't even know it at the time. The screen it self could move way to much from left to right. all the screws were there. Got my hands on another and found the screen was very sturdy. Then a friend of my ask me to fix his due to this problem, but he said he had dropped his from about a foot. Which is understandable if you drop it.

The left screw was the problem for me. but i did both screws to make it symmetry.

What I did, was took it apart filled both screw holes with super glue and drilled it out, you can now see the screws on the front. Then I tapped it with a 2.5mm treads. and added the screws.

Hopes this helps someone.
