That's odd. My desire charger shows the Not Charging symbol and takes ages to charge my Tab

Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Have to agree here! I've several HTC USB chargers, and not one of them will do more than trickle charge my Tab unless I use one of these adaptors.

Regards,

Dave
It would of course be unreasonable for me not to back this up with evidence, so here you are, please find attached a photograph of said charging.

I have found that whether or not it charges is intermittent but one way I can usually guarentee it will not charge (and gives the crossed out symbol) is that if my screen is on near full brightness and autobrightness off).

OK. So what you mean is, "Sometimes my Desire charger will work if my Tab does not need too much power at the time."

No, what I mean is, as long as the charging begins, by having the device not initially taking a load of power, it will continue to charge even if i mess with the brightness or anything else.

Screen to max, autobrightness off, wifi and bluetooth on and it's still charging:

P.S. It was at 42/44% in the photo, it's now at 86% at 22:15. I wouldn't call that slow at all.

Why isn't life simple?

I don't think any one is suggesting you are lying! However, I've 5 HTC charges (3 "horizontal" like the one in your pic, 2 of the newer "vertical" style) and 4 different cables (2 original, 2 non-Samsung), and I can't get any charger other than the 2 two official Samsung chargers to more than trickle charge my Tab, unless I use the adaptor mentioned in this thread.

I wonder if there is something different about your HTC charger? Just looking at two of mine, they have different part numbers yet look externally identical.

Dave

I'm at work at the moment but when I get home I'll send the info on my charger. I have only the original Samsung cable that came with the Galaxy Tab.

Just ordered an adapter at amazon uk. I tried to get one at amazon germany but they did not like my usa address. I will see if the uk sends me one. Also the scosche gobatt 2 battery charger comes with the galaxy tab adapter and 2.1usb output.

Hi, All!
There is a little trick actually in original Samsung Tab charger: lines D+ and D- (contacts 2 and 3) are short-circuited, and there are 2 resistors between them and +5 and GND contacts. 30 KOhm between +5 and 2/3, and 10 KOhm between 2/3 and GND. When you connect the charger (or USB port of PC) to the Tab, it first checks contacts 2 and 3 - if they are shortened, then it "thinks" that some charger is connected to it, not PC port. Then it measures voltage between 1 - 2/3 and 2/3 - 4, and if there is a predefined ratio, it "understands" that it is connected to AC charger and gets full power from it. I made this dongle myself in 15 minutes using standard USB cable (male/female), good knife (to peel off plastic from cable connectors), 2 resistors and soldering iron. Now my Tab can be smoothly charged from any 3-rd party iPad charger and original HTC Hero charger. A charger must be rated for output current not less than 1 A.
Hope this helps.

Ok, I am new to the Tab, but have a question.
My understanding is that I need an adapter so my Tab recognises a foriegn charger, and that the charger will need to output at least 1 amp to charge correctly. Also, standard USB ports only output 0.5 amp.
That is fine.

However if I want to charge the Tab from a computer, can I use the following combination:
the std Tab cable
the adapter (as sold on AmazonUK/DE)
A dual headed USB cable, of the type used to power external 2.5" HDD (2 x 0.5 amp)?

Any thoughts?

I bet some of you will have this lying around. I just need the adapter so i will order it and try it at home I think. Might take a while to get it in Oz though.

Not 100% sure by what you mean but here's my experience.

Tab comes with USB cable and USB adaptor

1. You can charge it at the wall socket using the above
2. You can charge it through your PC/Laptop/Powered USB Hub (takes longer)

I don't see the need for any other gizmos.

Are you replying to me? I thought this whole thread was about gizmos to charge, or at least better charge the Tab without using the supplied wall plug. From what I have read, if you try to charge from a non-standard plug it goes slow. If you try to charger direct from a PC usb port, it charges slow, and doesn't indicate it is charging.
I travel sometimes with a blackberry, laptop and now will want to use a tab. I sometimes work in offices overseas, and a single trip can take in 4 countries. I would prefer to not carry 3 different wall plugs (4 if camera is included) for devices, and 3 different plug adapters. So I try to combine charging methods. It would be great if one USB wall plug could handle both blackberry and Tab.
Also, charging from usb ports means I can charge at any pc, and not need a power outlet or adapter if overseas. There are often pc's around at hotels and airport lounges that you can use to charge from USB so I am wondering whether the adapter mentioned in this thread will let me get away with more rapid charging using only a couple of cables and commonly found ports.
Does that make sense?

I ordered the usb adapter from amazon/uk and had it delivered here to the United States. It did not take that long to get here. I now can use any/ I repeat any charger at all to charge my tab. This is a must have accessory. Also I bought a gobatt 2 ipad portable battery and it comes with the usb adapter.

That's why I got mine. Now I can charge quickly from laptop, PC, or usb cargers.
