Ok I found out how to add custom fonts. One of the problems in doing this is many fonts are missing Android specific blank spaces used by the OS mainly for labeling icons from what I can tell. I found a site that tells you which ones are missing.

http://blog.piratemedia.tv/2010-08-06-the-balad-of-the-crazy-boxes-android-fonts/

I downloaded FontCreator and compared the font I am using and the default system font and he is right. The characters he mentions are indeed missing. Since FontCreator is only a eval version I cannot save my changes. GRRRRRRRRR.

Anyway, I need to add the following and I cannot find a way to do it. Anyone know of an app I can use to add these characters to an existing font?

first is the character name – then the character code – then the character width

Uni2000 – $2000 – 1024
Uni2001 – $2001 – 2048
Uni2002 – $2002 – 1024
Uni2003 – $2003 – 2048
Uni2004 – $2004 – 683
Uni2005 – $2005 – 512
Uni2006 – $2006 – 341
Uni2007 – $2007 – 1128
Uni2008 – $2008 – 549
Uni2009 – $2009 – 410
Uni200A – $200A – 205
Uni200B – $200B – 0 < this and the one bellow are the most important for fixing the ugly sqaure problem
UniFEFF – $FEFF – 0 <

Here is a ss of the font I am using. It looks great on the lock screen and home screen. However, when I open up the App Drawer the programs with long names end in squares due to the missing characters.
