An accidental tick won't hurt you, you still have to hit it with fastboot and issue the command.

I think the joke was, this device never came with Marshmallow. They were saying if you can get Marshmallow to run on this, then let us know.

I had MM working in my 5x (installed with fastboot) before I upgrated to oreo. I am not sure if the nexus works better with oreo than with MM.

The 5x and 6p shipped with Marshmallow, so that's no surprise. The Pixel shipped with Nougat.
