So I was attempting to flash TWRP on a Alcatel 8079 10', following the
guide but it got stuck in a weird boot loop between the Alcatel logo and TWRP complaining it can't mount /data (invalid argument). Flashed w/ adb on linux, but now it doesn't detect the device and I can't even turn it off, it's just going about it continuously. Is it bricked/ is there any way to fix this?
EDIT: this may the issues described
@tesiz22, but I'm at loss as to how to proceed considering it bootloops in TWRP, so I can't really use the recovery. Is there any key combination that boots into fastboot/download mode?
It does sound like the issue I had. I had tried flashing TWRP but it wasn't the fixed new version (shame that the old file is still the first one you can find in the thread), so my device got into a bootloop. It could not boot to recovery and I would see the Alcatel logo. I also remember a pixellated, colorful screen on black but I am not sure if it was in this stage.
Then, I found out about a tool that was used to flash MediaTek devices, SP Flash Tool. Not all versions worked, as far as I remember, you had to download the right version. Thankfully, my post in this thread details the correct names/versions of files/programs. I don't remember what I did at that point but I managed to make it even worse, where I would not see anything but a black screen: the device was completely unresponsive. SP Flash Tool would not see it because either I did not have the right drivers (I went through 3 different sets of drivers, totalling ~10 - 15 drivers), or there was something wrong with my device. I found videos where people unscrewed the back panel, took the tablet apart, and desoldered the battery to turn off the device. Because it could be the push SP Flash Tool needed (the boot action) to detect the device, I figured I would follow the video guide.
I had tried letting the battery drain and charging it back, which took too long and I realized the device needed to be charged enough that it would not go out of power during the flashing process.
Then, I stumbled upon a key combination that would allow the device to be detected by the tool. There were 2 combos, the first one did not work but my device could be seen by the software thanks to the second combination, which I don't remember, unfortunately, though it could be in my post history. I did not have to desolder the battery.
I got to flash a rom (replaced the default recovery with the fixed TWRP file), but it did not work, I was in a bootloop once again, but I could finally see the Alcatel logo. I asked about it in this forum and I was told that the file that tells the program what range of blocks each sector takes up (the scatter file) had incompatible data with my device. I had downloaded another rom, which was larger in size, and flashed it, again, with the fixed TWRP. It has worked.
What I believe went wrong with your installation is that the wrong TWRP file got flashed over a sector used for something else (or it had the incorrect size), corrupting the entire rom. If it only affected the recovery sector, you can take the fixed TWRP recovery and flash it using SP Flash Tool. You can try formatting the sector with zeros, deleting everything in it first. If it does not work, you need to flash the larger rom I told you about, along with TWRP. Though, a word of caution, never flash the preloader.
Now, you are on Linux just as I was. If your resources are just as limited as mine, you can follow through my example and grab a Windows 7 .iso, boot to it in a Windows 7 VirtualBox, use a software that can install Windows 7 on portable storage. This should allow you to boot to Windows 7 with a usb stick. Skim my post history and I will be here to answer your questions, should you have any.
