I always switch back and forth between Lineage 18.1 (Android 11) and AlexisRom to test ...
I only do Clean Cache / System and Format Data (yes) before switching. Then start the recovery again and update the settings, clock, language, etc. Then simply flash the ROM.
Make sure to stay on TWRP version 3.3.1.1! There are probably problems higher up.
When backing up the OS, select Boot, Data, SystemImage. Android 11 or AlexisRom will get you back at any time.
(sorry for engl ... I use translators)
Device: G960F (starlte)

For a clean installation, I would do that with Format Data. If I restore a recovery, I do nothing. Yesterday I updated a few apps on AlexisRom and backed up the ARom via recovery. Then simply flash the LineageOS via restore. I would only do that with Format Data if I wanted absolutely clean Flash. But I cannot provide you with any more precise information.

sorry, I can't help you with that. For me that is always inscrutable.
Some time ago I updated my firmware from the S9 via Sammobile and Odin. Was on DTD 7 I think. Thought that couldn't hurt. But then when I wanted to restore my backup of lineage18.1 the shock was there. The data partition was formatted when I started the OS for the first time. I was no longer able to restore a backup. I then did some research at XDA and tried something with the no-verity-encrypt tool.
But that didn't work at first either. In the end I probably imported my backup of AlexisRom, which worked. Only then did the backup and restore with TWRP work again for other Roms.
I am currently at FUC6. In any case, I'm glad that everything is going as it should. Anyway, I'm very careful now with new firmware and bootloaders.
I don't know exactly what the solution was in the end.
