PROTOCOL
[2]UE SETTING & INFO > [1]SETTING > [1]PROTOCOL

[1]AS (AUTONOMOUS SYSTEM CONFIGURATION)
This menu allows you to mod:
-[1] FREQUENCY LOCK on certain bands. Best left at full in order to receive all frequencies when traveling. can expeirment to see which frequencies work best stationary.

-[2] RELEASE VERSION, Read more here about what they do. I'd leave UE revision level at Dynamic to receive coverage in all areas. however LTE 3gpp can be updated to release 10 however 64 qam may not be supported in all areas which will lead to more loss of 4g. Release 9 still supports 16qam

-[3] DUAL MODE IMPROV - No selection

-[4]DRX control (Discontinuous Reception & Transmission), factory setting is on, (Advantageous to battery life)

-[5] SECURITY CONTROL (Not sure what these do)

-AMR CONTROL (Adaptive Multi Rate) Speech coding to improve call quality. Read more here

[2]NAS (NETWORK AUTONOMOUS SYSTEM CONFIGURATION)
**Sub menu
> [1]NETWORK CONTROL
This menu allows you to mod:
- [1]Service Domain, CS + PS. PS = Packet Switched or GPRS = General Packet Radio Service. Colloquillay referred to as 2.5G. CS = Circuit Switched. Colloquially referred to as 2G data.

-[2]Acquisition Order. when booting or searching for signal this tells the system which to search for first. I'd leave it at automatic, as either may become available before the other. however GSM is typically slower at aquiring signal than UMTS

-[3]PLMN Cell selection Read more here. But automatic is best ;)

-[4]Modify the band preference of each signal mode.

-[5]Run only select modes.
**

[2]AUTO ANSWER - Self explanatory

[3]SELLOUT SMS - ??

[4] DUN ENABLE/DISABLE (Dial Up Network)

[5]LTE RELATED SETTINGS - Don't phuck with the APN Rules they are carrier set, and only modified for unlocked devices.

[3]CDMA
Not much to play with here
eHRDP- is like the middle man between 3g and 4g speeds. Leave on for good non 4g data.
RTRE - Runtime RUIM Enable -- (R-UIM) Removable User Identity Module verizon users leave sim on.

Thats all I feel like messing with right now.

Good Info...thanks!

We should talk to DesignGears about getting the debugging/engineering builds he has and see if ServiceMode will let us play with other settings.

So far I've gone through all the settings listed in that menu and have yet to find one that allows selection of the CDMA Vocoder between EVRC, EVRC 4GV-NB, and 13K. I'd find it weird that this option isn't listed somewhere (maybe another hidden menu)?

I gave that a try ##DATA#, but I don't believe the settings are saved.
First when you go into View/Advanced it shows the P_REV and Vocoders as <not set>.
If you go back to Edit/Advanced, you can view the vocoders (EVRC, 13K, 4GV), but it doesn't save, and still says <not set> after reboot.

Looks like we may need to enable another setting before they will stick. I'll see if I can figure anything out.

Is you look in the Sprint forums, they have the same settings, but they are saved, as they were changing them to a different vocoder to get better voice quality.
By default, the phones use a P_Rev of 6, which means the vocoder is set by the tower, regardless of what you set in the phone. So first the P_Rev has to be changed to 4 (which I can't) and then the Vocoder changed to standard EVRC (not EVRC-B 4GV-NB) or 13k uncompressed.
Its so simple to do on Motorola and LG phones, not sure why this is locked down on the Note 3 and GS4.

DRX CONTROL appears to be a protocol to reduce network utilization and reduce device power consumption. The question is whether or not turning this protocol off will help network connectivity and/or speed AND what effect it has on battery performance. I will turn mine off and see if I notice anything on either front. However, I live and work in an area with very good coverage, so I'm not sure that I'd be a good test case for the network speed/connectivity portion. I will definitely monitor battery consumption. This setting can be found under [2]UE SETTTINGS & INFO, [1]SETTING, [1]PROTOCOL, [1]AS, [4]DRX CONTROL.
I noticed an improvement when doing this. going to monitor battery life but at work download speeds almost doubled from 8 to 16 so i will continue to watch and monitor

well now it went down but ping is still better so idk

I tried with DRX on and off and haven't noticed any difference in my area for LTE speed.

I just tried this out to up my wifi and see if aws was available in my area. I dunno if I touched something I wasn't supposed to but now my N3 won't make any phone calls.

Any suggestions on what parameters I might have screwed up?

Does anyone know what to do if your efs file is empty? Thanks.

Edit: found it. You need to enable root in file explorer. I'm sure it's been said somewhere else
