Amazon Moto G4 bootloaders can't be unlocked?

I followed the instructions using RSDLite that appears to overwrite the OEM.img without an unlocked bootloader. Now with bootloaders locked there still seems to be a question if Motorola OTA will occur. If they do not, can we still update manually and if so how would that work (we cannot flash full images, can we)?

Yes, you can fastboot flash a factory image even when locked.

ok, i ran the fastboot command from the moto bootloader site, got my unlock data, put it in the data scrub and copy pasted it to the moto site, and it says not eligible. i bought the moto g4 from amazon with ads btw. already removed the ads and bloatware no prob, just wanted to get root access and custom recovery for when CM or some other rom is ready.

That's probably not going to happen now. I sort of wish I'd gotten the unlock code last week. Maybe they'll relax the restriction after the phone has been out awhile.

Just returned my Moto G4 with Prime Offers and ordered the regular Moto G4 - which is $149 on Amazon for Prime members right now - a whopping $25 more for no ads and an unlockable bootloader. Putting my money where my mouth is, supporting bootloader unlockable devices. Will report back on how this goes. (running a Mac so while I could spin up a Windows VM for RSDLite and flash all manner of things, I'd much rather just use flashboot).

Thanks to OP for all their hard work!
Valashtar - I haven't seen another post from you on this subject. Did you have any success? I too returned the ad version and ordered the regular Moto 4G. I'm not optimistic.

I just got the Amazon version and I turned on developer options to speed up the animation on screens. In there I see a setting to "Enable OEM unlocking" and it follows with "Allow the bootloader to be unlocked" Is that of any help to unlocking this phone (I did not try it)

No... That is just an extra security measure to prevent unauthorized unlocking in all Lollipop and newer devices. The unlock fails when submitting the IMEI and OEM code to Moto on their unlocking site, come back as unlock not available.

Sent from my Motorola XT1575 using XDA Labs

Well I'll have the standard version arriving Friday from Amazon to see what differences there are and confirm bootloader unlock. In the meantime I'm still wondering if anyone with a standard, non-ad version can comment as to whether or not it is still unlockable via the moto site
Were you able to unlock the bootloader?

Now I can't flash twrp (shows bootloader incorrect or corrupt) and I can downgrade to MM also (in rsd lite shows gpt.bin

has anyone tried flashing the non-amazon prime version over the amazon prime g4?
Search the ROM forum and buried in threads you will find that some have but since the 64 version the only two people that I believe mentioned they tried both failed and had to send their device in (prior versions worked).

You can still get rid of the ads for 64 though using the technique described in the play forums (you have to download a file and execute it).

If you start trying please let us know your results.

Does anyone know whether or not its worth me disassembling to be able to physically touch the flash memory onboard the moto g4 (i know its very intrusive) but i have learned how to reflash devices using certain tools. Basically, I need to know how small is the flash controller and can I clip onto it. I refuse to solder a phone just on the muscle of 1) my phone is new 2) i have to close the thing.

aside from that, I cant even log into amazon through my phone and it is completely bone stock..... so how about that? the amazon moto g4 i own wont let me log into amazon through their ad supported phone....... haa just thought that was funny
