I don't see what is so absurd about op's question. IO2013 is like two months after general availability of this phone, then you'll probably see key lime pie at end of q3 or something so maybe a six month difference.

So absurd no, but probably stupid since no one has the answer to that - even Sony. If they release an upgrade thats fine but why would you want to run OEM versus stock? First thing I'd do if I bought the Z would be to wipe off the Sony customizations and build my own.
I'm not really a fan of AOSP so I would choose a modified stock than AOSP ROM. I prefer lot's of customizations :)

If I would have wanted AOSP I would have gone nexus. So yeah I buy sony phones for the Camera, Bravia, XLoud, Music Player, Keyboard, messaging etc.

Well yeah it's all different on each person.

I actually think this question strikes to the heart of Sony. How far does Sony look ahead as far as OS update when it comes to its devices? We don't need choppy excuses why "this device cannot be updated" and then developers end up getting it to work flawlessly. I think the question is, "How long is a device's OS update life cycle with Sony?"

That comment only applied to the Xperia Play device. But I think they do have a real reason for this. Just that they don't wanna open it

ONLY the Xperia Play? How about other 2011 devices and some 2012 devices are losing support too. Anyway, my point is Sony hasn't shown long term support for ANY device as of yet so this thread question is valid.

Check the document included when you bought your device. It says there sony will only support phones within 18months period from release.

Other Xperia 2011 devices did indeed get updates within 18months(Major and Minor ones) except Xperia Play so yes they indeed gave proper support. Just not sure about 2012 models but I seem to notice some jellybean updates rolling on some 2012 models?

Here are the list of firmwares released by sony at least on my 2011 phone which is Xperia Pro within 18months.

For the arc s they did a GM to ICS updated, they looked at a JB updated but said it could not be done due to the lack of RAM. I'm running CM10 atm. But I think RAM could be a problem with the Sony ROM as it needs all the Sony software on that as well. Since the Xperia Z is pretty max out in terms of specs this should not be a problem any longer.

It better NOT be a problem.

I don't know how Sony is recently but the reason that i'm on this forum at all is because of they were slow to update the X10 from 1.6 which is what it was released with when everything else had 2.1 looking to move on to 2.2. my wife's captivate was on froyo while the offical version for mine was still donut. I got sick of waiting and it was good i did cause it was more than six months before an offical update came out... TO ECLAIR. Now i know that's ancient history but following that logic that question is not that absurd.

Well I can imagine. Would have been pissed of as well. Luckily for me I had a desire at the time :)
Anyway after the the X10 debacle SE did this big mea culpa and made the 18 months update promise as well as open up to devs and be more open. I have to say I was not disappointed when I bought the Arc s. The Arc S is a SE device and I don't know how Sony is going to handle stuff, but they must be totally mad if they don't give decent support as a bad rep is the last thing you need in this competitive market. That being said, stranger things have happened :)

as a side note the Sony tablet S (September 2011 - October 2012)
Did receive an mayor updated HC to ICS and some say that it will get an update later this year to JB.

This is a meaningless topic. Even if sony don't offer the update of android 5 or future version, you can also replace the OS which you want after making the device rooted, it is the superiority of all the android devices.

Sony's updating history isn't pretty, but its definitely improving, hopefully it will keep on doing so, and if what they say is true about them now focusing more on high end devices that should mean less releases this year, so their resources wont be so divided and they will be able to give us the consumers an improved deal with updates
