I'm not sure what delays you're talking about - in my usage, I haven't encountered any delays except the occasional one from Lawnchair and that's because that's even more alpha than AOSP 10 is at this point.
The only big issues I'm aware of are either bugs in AOSP itself (notifications fail in some of the default apps because it seems that they don't present a proper notification channel to the system and so their notifications get dropped - dialer, messaging, and probably the clock; I don't use them anyway and just install the Google ones myself), or missing notification sounds by default (configure them yourself, easy enough to do - the sound files are included, but the default resource paths are incorrect, which I'll get in one of the next builds). And of course, you have to install the apps you want since the bundled Gapps package only includes play store.
And "artificial wheel"? Huh?
