Are the leeches like me going to have to wait for the official release or are there some developers out there getting it ready for the S5 Verizon?

Well, what I can say is that since our device has a locked bootloader, you will have to wait until Verizon releases the official version as it will be a signed ROM and have a compatible kernel. Now, if you happen to own an unlocked DEV device, you may be able to get it from AOSP early with CyanogenMOD, ect.
