My question is, "Is there a messaging app that tells you when the other person is typing a message, similar to iMessage"?

GoSMS Pro works OK. typically it will receive the message outside the group and repost shortly thereafter.

You aren't going to find one then. Even iMessage requires that the other person has iMessage (to let the other know when they are typing).

Google Hangouts is essentially the same as iMessage.
