We all know that it's a con that a phone which costs around £600 - £1,000 GB only gets 2 years worth of support with it's O/S, we all know why they do it, it's so we basically don't keep hold of our new phones for too long and buy the new releases when they come out. They shouldn't be allowed to do what they do imo, nobody seems to govern these companies and they are basically allowed to have too much freedom.

They may not be "governed" but we do have freedom whether or not to support companies who do this type of two year update nonsense. I for one will be hanging on to my Note 5. Could I upgrade to the Note 8? Yes. But I won't. I don't want to go the rooting option but I may root and ROM just to go to Oreo (LineageOS) and keep this phone going. I hope it even gets "P" (Pineapple)

Funny you should pick on Samsung out of all of the Android manufacturers; nearly all of them support their devices for only two years, even Google. So before you start complaining about how profit-greedy a company is, just remember that the company that *owns* Android doesn't even care to offer support for older devices. Also laughable that Google should make fun of Apple for ditching the headphone jack and look what they're doing with the Pixel 2. Pick a manufacturer, any manufacturer. You're not going to get the support you're looking for unless you switch to Apple.
Didn't realize Google only provides 2 OS updates.... Love my Mac Pro and regular updates; Love my Note 5 and just picked up the Tab S3.....but
given the limited updates and the cost for each android unit, the TAB S3 just went back and I picked up the IPAD Pro 10.5...yes - pricier but not really as it won't be obsolete in just 2 years.

I'm not an Apple person (I wouldn't mind a high spec MacBook ) but yes they do support their products longer. Still waiting on an update for my Note 5.... T-mobile guy said between last Thursday and tomorrow. Nothing yet

I called T-mobile last week about getting the blueborne security patch and I got transferred to someone with knowledge of it. He knew exactly what it was and said there would be an update pushed out between last Friday and this past Tuesday.

There's been zero updates for this phone.

People might say it's not a big deal but really it is. There are small security threats that need to be addressed and Samsung and Google aren't addressing those issues. This phone is only 2 years old... Barely...and it's like they've given up on it already. I'm stuck on a July 2017 patch with no sign of even a small update in sight. It really is pathetic. I can go on my 2010 Dell laptop that's 7 almost 8 years old and it has the latest patches from Microsoft. I'm up to date there. Why not on a phone? I don't get it

There's no news. Note 5 isn't getting official Oreo.
dude, we don't care about "official" one. that's why we bought android based phone instead of an apple device. atleast that's why for me. we are waiting news about unofficial oreo builds. yeah unofficial builds. not even official lineageos. soo yeah, any news?

Well ask in the development topic forum not the general and you'll probably get answers.

If that holds true that's rare. I spoke to a t-mobile tech representative who said Note 5 wouldn't get it. We'll see though. My phone has been whack ever since I changed the battery btw. Upset with this phone now

IF the S6 gets Oreo update then the Note 5 really should too. They are almost identical in specs. But we will see if Samsung is getting bothered by users jumping ship to the likes of Apple or other android phone makers.
The real question here is how many users need to jump ship before they take notice and do something to remedy the situation ?
Only time will tell if Samsung is worried about this or not !
